Floral holiday destinations on site will offer us a virtual trip without the need for a passport. Flaming June in an English Garden is the first experience, designed by local landscape architect and garden designer, Ruth Gwynn, with all the scented classics you would expect to see from roses to lavender. Talking of roses, the new David Austin rose for 2021 ‘ ‘Nye Bevan’ really is a must have – named after the fouder of the NHS, such a fitting addition to any post lockdown border.

If you’re a strawberry appreciator, then a selection of local varieties are being grown specially for the occasion. James Wong passed on some fascinating strawberry related facts in his book ‘Grow For Flavour’ for which I was lucky enough to attend the London launch back in 2015. Did you know that the aromatic compounds that give the berries their flavour are directly related to the amount of light they receive? Therefore if you halve the light, you literally halve the flavour! So a sunny spot for both berry and yourself it is! James also stated that according to studies, strawberries grown through a red plastic mulch produced fruit that was not only sweeter but a massive 20 percent larger! The book truly is a fascinating read. It’s not only fruit on offer in this part of the show, for a fabulous fried alternative, as British as the berry – good old fish and chips will also be on hand (well hopefully on a plate!!).

If you’re missing the Med, then the Malvern equivalent might just do the trick, wander amongst a grove full of ancient olives and take in some Latin Jazz as you graze on some Greek cuisine whilst planning your next Malvern move to the Caribbean or Far East, also on offer in an ‘Island Exotic’ on site creation.

Malvern is and always has been a leader in family friendly shows, accessible, welcoming and spacious, with its 90 acre showground – there’s absolutely no reason to not be packing your portable plant trolley in anticipation!

Tickets for The Midsummer Garden Life Festival are available from www2.theticketfactory.com/three-counties/online/

This year, more than ever, we could all do with a little (or rather quite a lot) of positivity, and this is refelcted in the Festival’s Happiness Theatre. A space sure to be filled with encore enticing excitement from gardening greats, who I’m proud to have spent many happy hours with, including Carol Klein and James Alexander Sinclair who will be sharing his passion for planty words with a selection of floral poetry. A performance you won’t want to miss!

Here’s to horticultural thrills at the foot of the Malvern Hills.
