Live on air Write for the mike

Working with a partner, choose one of the topics below and start planning your dialogue. It is important to remember that you will be presenting your dialogue to the class, so the text must flow and sound natural. Your dialogue should be 160 words long.

1 Imagine you are a DJ who has to tell an eager listener that she has not in fact won the competition you are running. Create the dialogue.

FOCUS ON...

Key features of a dialogue: • How to convey personality (the words written in italics in brackets can give clues about tone and body language)

• Who is speaking to whom

• What the

context is (this will determine the register and subject matter)

2 Choose your favourite South African music celebrity. Imagine this person being interviewed on the radio by a popular DJ. At times, the two egos are in competition, but it’s being broadcast live. Create the dialogue.

3 You have been asked by the Learner Representative Council to interview a local DJ because they used to attend your school. Create the dialogue of this interview, focussing on the DJ’s history, sense of community and current projects – especially a promising bursary scheme.

4 Imagine that a local musician has phoned in to a popular radio talk show. The musician is furious that there is so much hype about American music, but very little airtime is given to musical artists from our own coutnry. Create the dialogue between the DJ and the musician.

Present your dialogue

• Form larger groups and share the dialogues you have written.

• Do a peer assessment by providing feedback on how you enjoyed each other’s dialogue.

• Choose the best one from the group to share with the class. • After you have delivered your dialogue presentation, reflect on whether you succeeded in meeting the requirements of the task. Your teacher will give you feedback, but ask your classmates for comments too.
