Bernard Mee – true volunteer
BERNARD Mee, of Bearsted, who died in hospital on Decem- ber 13 aged 76, was a true volun- teer who took on numerous local roles. A great number, largely un- aware, have reason to be grateful for his selfless service.
Educated at Maidstone Gram- mar School, Bernard trained as an accountant with Kent County Council and, after initially working for the health service, moved to British Gas as an audit manager. He was a member and treasurer of the Kent branch of the Institute of Managers for many years. Bernard was a member of The Rotary Club of Maidstone for 22 years and served as treasurer. He was also treasurer of Home Start, Maidstone, for 13 years and men- tor for the Princes Trust. He served as secretary of The Cobtree Char- ity Trust Ltd. Bernard was a volunteer and treasurer of other local organisa- tions including Maidstone Art So- ciety. He served as secretary and President of the Old Maidstonian Society. He lived in Bearsted for many
Snow days
MAIDSTONE enjoyed and then en- dured a spell of cold weather and the biggest snowfalls in years. Temperatures at night slumped
to -11, with up to a foot of snow in places. The first falls happened on February 6 and continued on and off for the following few days. This picture of Humphrey the En-
glish springer spaniel, owned by the Menenes-Bautista family in Leeds, was taken near Kingswood. While Kent County Council's
highways teams kept the roads grit- ted and the traffic moving, resi-
dents complained Maidstone Bor- ough Council failed to pick up their refuse.
Local plan gures explained
MAIDSTONE residents are re- peatedly commenting on current proposals in the Local Plan re- view about the amount of new housing, says a borough council officer report.
It explains: “The formula for calculating housing need is pre- scribed by government using a standard methodology applying across the country rather than being set locally. There are sev-
eral examples of authorities proposing not to meet fully the housing need figure … and they failed their Local Plan examina- tions.” This would lead to “planning by appeal” and the authority being put in special measures. Green Party spokesman Donna Greenan described the Local Plan review as “sham- bolic”.
years, where he greatly enjoyed village life and played golf with friends as a member of Bearsted Golf Club.
Holy Cross Church, Bearsted,
was a very important part of Bernard’s life. He served on the parochial church council several times and was twice treasurer. He was a keen bellringer and also participated in guest ringing at many local churches before retire- ment.
He is survived by his widow, Juliet, four children and six grand- children.
