Why the touchscreen is so 2020!

Touchscreens, once a frontier of con- sumer technology, are falling out of favour. The pandemic has people wary of hygiene more than ever before. One survey found that up to 80% of partic- ipants considered touchscreens unhy- gienic, while 73% welcomed new al- ternatives, saying they’d be more likely to interact with touchless technology in the future. As Covid-19 continues to shape our habits, technology is adapting to our behaviours. Here’s just some of the ways Intel partners are setting prece- dents in unprecedented times: •Gesture control – Ultraleap’s mid-air haptics technology uses ultrasound to create a sensation that mimics touch. Sensors then enable this sensation to react to hand movements, so users can exercise touchless control. •Digital sales floors – Existing infor- mation terminals are being replaced by gesture-controlled versions with the help of German company Ameria. Re- tail’s been notoriously hard hit during

the pandemic, but this touch-free fu- tureproofing offers a safe future. •Gaze tracking – 4tiitoo’s NUIA sys- tem leverages tracking technology to monitor eye movements, which can in turn be used to control screens. Talk about losing touch…
