A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT By Don Brunner, President

Don Brunner BRG Apartments

Hello everyone. We are off and run- ning now in 2021. We started off the year as we do each year with the National Apartment Association (NAA) Chairman of the Board. Rick Graf with Cushman and Wakefield was our featured speak- er at our January General Membership Meeting and spoke on the importance of membership in your local association as well as what the national organization can do for you and your business. Rick has been in the business for more than 40 years and brings great value to NAA. He

is a tremendous resource for our industry and it was great to have him as our guest.

Next, we will be moving on to our State of the Industry with

Dave Lockard and the CBRE Team on Tuesday, February 9. It’s a shame this event is virtual as it’s always a great opportunity to capture up-to-date information and to see a number of individu- als who normally don’t attend a regular GMM. Please mark your calendars for that event, followed by the Finance Forum on Friday, March 5 headlined by Sara Behrman with Bellwether Enterprise Real Estate Capital and Dave Lockard with CBRE. As I mentioned earlier, we recently hosted our virtual January

GMM. This event is normally so nice because of the installation of our incoming officers and the various awards for outgoing lead- ers - including the Presidents award. This year was no exception. First, I had the opportunity to present Abbie Huffman with Rent Manager the Plaque and Gavel as the Past President of Associate Council. Abbie did a tremendous job in her role. She was always

prepared, lead great meetings, and ensured everyone - even dur- ing COVID - was aware of what was going on and worked hard to present opportunities for our supplier partners to interact with customers. I have had the good fortune to call Abbie a friend, and to watch her grow in the industry at both the local and national lev- els. I am proud that Abbie has been elected to the role of National Supplier Council (NSC) Secretary. In three years Abbie will be the first ever NSC President from Cincinnati. Thanks for all you do Abbie! Next, I had the opportunity to select someone to be the re-

cipient of the President’s Award. This award is given each year by the president based on their thoughts on who made the biggest impact. In my case it was easy: Melissa Joy with Village Green Management. Melissa was asked a couple years ago to help start the Social Media Committee along with Carrie Riley with Towne Properties. She not only has taken charge of that and given us a presence on several social media platforms, but has continually looked for ways to enhance the exposure of the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Apartment Association. Throughout this pan- demic, her weekly spotlights - which she makes really easy if you have been a participant or would like to volunteer - have given both insight and opportunity to people and companies who were missing chances for exposure. When you listen to these inter- views, I think you will agree that Melissa missed her calling: she should have been in journalism! Melissa, thanks for all you do for the betterment of GCNKAA and our industry. I want to wrap up by saying stay healthy, and I look forward to seeing everyone soon on zoom, and then hopefully in person for the first time at our June summer golf outing.
