eall have our favourites! Some riderspreferfull rubber reins,
othershalfrubber,some plaited and in the showing world it has to be leather!
Whatever your preferred choice, makesuretheyare in
good repair and safebycarrying out regular checks. Reins areanimportant pieceoftack on the bridle as it is
one of the rider’smethods of communication to the horse. Depending if youhavea horse or pony, afull sizerein
should be 1.5m in length and forapony1.3m. Forjumping or flat racing the full sizerein will need to be shorter in length to 1.4m, as ashorter hold is required in the sport. Mostreins arenow sold in four sizes:pony, cob, full and extra-full. The widthofthe reins is also an area to consider so they
match the width of your bridle,aswell as the sizeofyour horse or ponyand also fit to the sizeofyour hands. Thereisawide rangeand varietyofreins all suited for
different needs and riding disciplinessoitisimportant to choose something that is comfortable and appropriate.

Full rubber-grip –Favoured forshowjumping and eventing, these reins arecoveredinrubber to provide soft grip without losing durability. Another greatfeature is that the reins areideal forall weatherconditions, because the rubber doesnot take on anywater thereforedrying
almostinstantly.Because of the rubber covering the reins cancome in an array of colours.
Continental –Continental reins areweb reins with leather markersspaced out on the reins, which makeit easier forriderstohold them or if theystruggle to keep their hands
even.The webreins arelightweight, soft and flexible because theyare made from cotton and aregenerally used foreverydayflatwork/schooling.
Laced Reins –These leather reins areoften seen on hunter bridlesbecause theyprovide good grip thanks to the laced pattern designsewn in. The overlaid laced leather also gives anice traditional stylingcommonly used in showing.
Plaited –Fivestrips of leather areplaited together to form one single strapwhich becomesthe rein and anatural surfacetogrip whilstlooking smart.
Half Rubber –Similar to the full rubber reins, only one side of the rein is coveredinthin rubber,which isfavouredamong dressage ridersasthatprovides the
grip.Theyare also thinner to eliminatebulk foraclose connection with the horse’smouth.
