December in the garden
Christmas is just around the corner and we all hope for a much calmer, less eventful and healthy 2021.
The great news of the covid vaccine should (hopefully) enable some level of normal to return during next year.
Everyone has has such a disrupted and worrying year, we all deserve some luck and good fortune in 2021. December brings
the
fresh foliage looking good for longer. Be generous with the decorations to hide the floral foam underneath. Holly berries are the traditional final touch, but bright-red chilli peppers also work well. Push a short length of wire through their stems to attach them to the wreath.
true
beginning of winter and we all know this can bring some troublesome
weather for
gardeners. At the moment, we seem to be having quite a wet spell and this may mean staying off the garden for a day or two. If this is the case, the leaves on paths driveways always need clearing. If not, this then there is always small jobs that can be done. Christmas is a great time and can be very expensive so being able to make some decorations from goodies in the garden can be great fun gives a huge amount of satisfaction. There's no need to pay for an expensive wreath in the shops, as it's easy to make one using material gathered from the garden. To keep things simple, use a ring-shaped piece of floral foam, which costs about £5-£7 from the garden centre, florist or online. The green type can be soaked in water, so it will keep
Another easy and cheap decoration can be made by collecting some branches from willow or hazel. I would go for about three foot long and no thicker at the cut end than a little finger. You want some interesting twists and bends. Spray them silver to give them a frosted effect. You could add pine cones or thistle heads and spray them too. Place in a vase or decorated flower pot and arrange fairy lights on them.
For the gardeners in our lives, try and get them some lovely presents for the garden. Bare rooted roses will gives many, many years of beautiful flowers; these can be planted around Christmas as long as the ground is not frozen. Or what about a native tree? This will last potentially for over a hundred years and you will be helping the planet breathe a little bit better.
Now to the real jobs that can be done in between shopping and wrapping and seeing friends and family.

Making your own wreath is a great, cost-effective way to decorate your home this Christmas!
Move containers of shrubs or bedding plants to a sheltered spot, clustering them together helps protect the root systems from suffering frost damage. Lift and store dahlia tubers once their leaves are blackened by frost.
Prune climbing roses now by cutting away diseased or damaged growth and tying in
any new shoots to their support. Prune older flowered side
shoots back by two thirds of their length. Leave the faded flower heads on your hydrangeas until the spring, as they will provide frost protection to the swelling buds further down the stems. Please enjoy Christmas and your garden this December. If you want any help in your garden
with maintenance or preparation for spring 2021, you can call us, we are happy to help. We would like to wish everyone a wonderfully happy Christmas and a truly wonderful, healthy 2021.

Halesworth Volunteer Centre
Here for Christmas, for you
We are very pleased to confirm that there will be a Halesworth Community lunch this year. A lovely lunch will be prepared by Rev. Jane and her team and delivered to the door of anyone who is alone this Christmas. We are very grateful for the support of Churches Together and Councillor Goldson as well the other local businesses and individuals who have already said they will help including Country Kitchen and Mills and Sons and Daughters. We will also be delivering some other little treats in the run up to Christmas. Huge thanks to all the makers and bakers and our friends at the Coop for a very generous donation.
If you know someone who is going to be alone this Christmas, do please tell them about the Christmas Day lunch. If you are alone or will be missing your family this year because of covid restrictions, please don't hesitate to call us to book your lunch. Ring 01986 875600.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered their help during the second lockdown. We are still shopping at the Coop for people who cannot get out and about during these challenging times. Our team of shoppers and brilliant bus drivers from HACT will be shopping right through the Christmas and New Year holiday, so if you need help with shopping (especially the heavy stuff)just give us a call. We know that these dark nights can make people feel very isolated and alone. Our 'Isolation Buster' team of volunteers are here to provide a friendly chat
and social support. If you would appreciate a call or visit or have a neighbour or friend who might benefit, please call us and we will tell you more about how we can help.
If you cannot travel independently, our Community Car Service will still get you to your medical appointments: opticians, dentists, podiatry, blood tests, doctors and hospital appointments.
The Community Larder (our partnership project with the Blyth Valley Team Ministry) is going from strength to strength. Running on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:30 -11:30, you can come to the Larder to share food and staples and get the fresh veg you need. Everyone is welcome.
Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us and continues to support us during this pandemic. Thank you to those who have given such generous donations and those of you who are supporting the Community Larder so generously. We would like to thank the following businesses for
gifting food and treats
including the Queens Head at Bramfield, Haw Wood Farm, Low Farm Eggs, Morrisons, Coop, Peasenhall General Store, Melons, Rosedales, Suffolk Community Foundation
Brewin Dolphin, Fair Share and an anonymous egg producer.
