MOTORING

Porsche’s bright new spark

In the November edition of Business Network, we looked at a few electric vehicles currently on sale in the UK – one of which was the Porsche Taycan. Here, motoring journalist Nick Jones takes a more in-depth look at a vehicle that can truly be called an electric supercar, and is setting the roads alive with its good looks and astonishing power traits.

With the electric Taycan, what you get here is a big, bold statement from Porsche on how a supercar can evolve. Indeed it still has four doors and room for two adults in the rear, but there’s no petrol or diesel engine up-front – just batteries sat low in the car (it has the lowest centre of gravity of any Porsche produced) to propel it to a healthy top speed and mind-boggling times to hit the magic 60mph figure. There are three versions available – entry level 4S,

then Turbo and Turbo S, all of which are purely electric, despite the badging. The 4S still packs 429 horsepower as standard thanks mainly to a pair of electric motors driving all four wheels that shoot it to 60 in under four seconds. If you tick the option box for the Performance Battery Plus, power goes up to 483 horses. By comparison, the Turbo S attains the same 60mph time in just 2.8 seconds. So despite the weight with all the batteries, it’s damn quick. So how far can it travel? Well, Porsche says on a

standard charge it’ll do 252 miles, but if you opt for the aforementioned Performance Battery Plus it can achieve 287. In the real world, my guess is if you work on around 200, you’ll not be far away – it is a Porsche, after all.

94 business network December 2020/January 2021 On the inside, it’s lovely and comfortable, with

everything to hand and no less than three standard touchscreens to play with – containing all the settings for most of the car’s operational wizardry. One can specify (as an option) a screen for the

passenger to let them see what’s going on in the car or have a look at the sat nav if it suits. I’ve driven a lot of electric cars, but this interior is by far the best I’ve ever come across. Not going to go for what’s standard in the Taycan now, as I’d be typing the list for the next hour or so. So go for the Performance Battery Plus option, as it

delivers more power and the charging rate is 270kW through the Taycan’s 800-volt electrical system, as opposed to just 225kW without it. It also allows you to charge it between 10% and 78% of battery power in just 20 to 25 minutes, which is impressive, and the pre- warming of the batteries feature is a brilliant innovation. Prices start at £83,635 for the Taycan 4S, rising

considerably if you opt for the more powerful Turbo and Turbo S variants. But just look at it… what a stunning car this really is, with real-world mileage on a single charge.
