more than 100 letters in the cellar of her semi-derelict mill house in south- west France, she was drawn into a beguiling world of discovery through two world wars and two remarkable families, one aristocratic, the other wine-makers and farmers. Dusty and fragile, these handwritten letters shed a fascinating light on the lives and deaths of people who each lived through the turbulent years of the first half of the twentieth century. The stories told in the letters - personal, rich and


revealing - prompted Sunman to travel around France to study archives and parish registers in a quest to understand more, not only of the characters who wrote so poignantly but also of the backdrop to their lives in a remote corner of the Lot.
