NEPTUNE GATHER AROUND THE TABLE
Christmas lunch is such a special occasion. It’s not just the food we cook or the people we share it with, the Christmas table is almost becoming just as important for setting the festive scene.

This month Neptune Edgbaston’s home designer Kate, shares a handful of ideas to help you create an inviting dining room this December whoever you are sharing food with.
LAYER ON CANDLELIGHT Candles are the heart and soul of a welcoming dining table, and even if you do nothing else, a flurry of them down the centre will have lots of impact. Like lighting, candles are most effective when you use a variety of heights and styles, so mix tealights with candlesticks and, if you have room, hurricane lanterns.
ELEVATE EVERY EXPERIENCE Your Christmas Day lunch is the high-point of the season for sure, but don’t forget that there are lots of other dining table occasions you can make special as well. It can be as simple as setting the table properly for a festive breakfast and it doesn’t have to feel formal – try mixing two or three crockery sets (choose pieces with similar characteristics, such as an artisanal feel or soft shades of off-white), simply folding large linen napkins at each place setting and including a few sprigs of seasonal greenery.
LOOK BEYOND THE TABLE Remember not to neglect the rest of your room around your dining table, whether yours is in its own room or your kitchen. A dresser’s surface or a kitchen shelf can become the perfect place to create a wintery scene using tealights, homemade festive treats in jars and on cake stands, and a wreath. Choose

pieces made from ceramic (echoing them with touches of white in the wreath) which will feel in-keeping with dining table crockery.
CONSIDER AFTER-DINNER MOMENTS Dressers are dining room staples for many of us now, but have you considered a drinks trolley? It could be a piece of furniture of its own or a section of a sideboard or, in an open-plan space, a kitchen cabinet, but there’s something very comfortable about having everything you need for post-supper drinks close at hand, meaning there’s no need to interrupt the flow of conversation.
