NOVEMBER 2020 THE RIDER /13 The Power Of A Horse Over 40 years ago a group of like minded horse people,

who recognized the power of a horse, came together to launch a national charity, Canadian Therapeutic Riding As- sociation (CanTRA). Their intention was to create a network of member ther-

apeutic riding centres across Canada, with trained and cer- tified instructors, and also to ensure these centres were part of an ongoing instructor education and accreditation sys- tem, providing safety and professionalism. Today there are CanTRA member centres in every

Canadian province, who are successfully serving thousands of children and adults with a wide range of disabilities. This is made possible through the power of horses partnered with knowledgeable CanTRA certified instructors.

There are so many possibilities to

make a positive difference as we face these challenging times together. Find out more about this program by

visiting www.sunrise-therapeutic.ca, or phoning Suzy Bender, Certified EAL Fa- cilitator, Senior Sunrise Instructor and Program Coordinator at 519-837-0558 Ext. 22 or Lynne O’Brien, Executive Di- rector, 519-837-0558 Ext. 31. For more information about CanTRA

visit www.cantra.ca or to find out about a CanTRA member centre near you, email ctra@golden.net

In common with so many in our communities, this pan-

demic has taken its toll on these therapeutic riding programs and drastic changes have been necessary. CanTRA launched a ‘Survival Strategies’ program, bringing mem- bers together from across the country, by Zoom conferenc- ing, to support one another and share survival ideas. Also due to the cancellation of the CanTRA 40th An-

niversary Conference in the Spring, a virtual education sys- tem was implemented, and each session has enjoyed a high rate of attendees. Every therapeutic riding program has had to adapt to

the new normal. Since providing these riding programs ne- cessitates close contact with the majority of the participants, not only with mounting the rider on the horse, but through leading and side walking with the riders, there has been a need to adjust procedures and develop innovative new pro- grams. From British Columbia to the Atlantic Provinces some

centres are now offering Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) programs. These programs provide sessions that positively impact mental, emotional and physical well-being through ground work with their well trained therapy horses, and en- gaging the power of the human animal bound. One of these programs near Guelph, Ontario asks the

question: In this challenging time of a global pandemic are you craving normality, open spaces, connection with others, and most of all emotional, mental and physical well-being? Or do you know someone who is? Sunrise Therapeutic Riding & Learning Centre is able

to provide many of the things you are seeking, on a 102 acre farm in a beautiful country setting, following all stringent social protocols. Most importantly you will be connecting on the ground

with some amazing therapeutic horses, who will lift your spirits, calm your mind and show you the wonderful bene- fits of human animal bonding. Your session with those from your own household, with

colleagues from your front line, or essential worker shift, or those 12 years old and over in your immediate circle, will be led by a certified Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) Facilitator. This is a fun and uplifting experience, working with

trained therapy horses who love being around people. Con- sider joining our certified staff with horses from our therapy team, either during the beautiful Fall weather, as a break from being indoors this Winter, or maybe book for an in- troductory session for Spring 2021. Thousands of children and adults with a wide range of

special needs, those just seeking emotional support through being around our amazing horses, and campers who return year after year to the inclusive day camp, have benefitted from the ‘Sunrise’ experience over the past 38 years. Perhaps this opportunity is not for you, but you would

like to reach out and make a difference in the life of some- one who could really benefit from this great experience. For example, you may have a Front Line or Essential

worker in your family, or living on your street, or a friend who is impacted by loneliness, who you would love to ho- nour with a gift certificate for this great equine experience.
