Warning after doorstep scam
MAIDSTONE residents are being urged to remain vigilant after a pensioner was robbed in Kingswood. It was reported that on Friday, September 4, a man walked up to a property and spoke to the occu- pant, a woman in her 90s, about cutting a hedge for her. The man then allegedly stepped inside her home and left with her handbag. Detective Inspector Richard O’Toole said: “We would like to take this opportunity to remind residents to be alert to unexpected callers offering to complete re- pairs or gardening jobs. “Don’t leave your doors and windows open or even unlocked, unless you are nearby.
“If you are approached for
work, you do not have to accept immediately. Ask for their quote in writing and take some time to ask other traders for quotes too. “If in doubt about a doorstep
caller, ask them to leave and come back at a more convenient time when a family member or friend can be with you.”
Anyone with information is asked to call 01622 604100, quot-

Police have issued the follow- ing advice: l Officers are reminding people to check unexpected visitors are genuine before allowing them into their homes; l Ask for identification and make a note of it; l If you are not certain they are genuine, ask them to come back later so you have time to verify their identity and perhaps ask for a relative or friend to be there on their return; l Never give out banking or per- sonal details to anyone you’re un- sure about. If you can’t be certain if a visitor is who they say they are, ask them to come back later. This gives you time to verify their iden- tity and perhaps also arrange for a relative or friend to be there; l Remember, it’s okay to tell vis- itors you’re not interested or ask them to leave if you aren’t com- fortable. Legitimate visitors will understand.
