Thieves take shelters from young farmers
HEARTLESS thieves have forced a farming charity to appeal for do- nations after stealing equipment worth more than £7,000. New shelters had been up for a matter of days at Forstal Field in Aylesford, run by Cobtree Young Farmers, when thieves dismantled them in an overnight raid. Police believe the shocking act took place between 6pm on Sun- day, August 30 and 6pm on Tues- day September 1.
Mark Essex (58), who has volun-
teered at the farm for 12 years, says he was gutted to find that two shel- ters, two gates and a trough filled with goldfish had been stolen. The UK Power Networks project manager said: “You can’t help but feel that if the police acted a bit quicker, something might have been done about it by now. “I am not usually soppy, but I re-
ally was gutted and a lot of our members, who are between 12 and 18 years old, were really upset.
“The shelters meant the animals had shade in the hotter months and somewhere to rest in winter. “Our members had come in throughout the pandemic to build them. It was 90% done when they were stolen, and we had just come back after the bank holiday. Inspector Oliver O’Brien of the Maidstone Community Safety Unit said: “The suspects are thought to have got into the field through a gate opposite Cobtree Manor Park.
“They would have needed a truck or a van to remove these items and we are appealing for anybody with information or dashcam footage that may assist the investigation to contact us.” Anyone with information can

News Woodland’s
£10k legacy BEARSTED Woodland Trust has received a £10,000 legacy from life member Stephen Burt of Bramley Crescent, Bearsted, who died just before last Christmas. Its newsletter reports on an “ex- traordinary year” due to a Covid- 19 shutdown in maintenance from March to June and abnormal weather. This led to an extensive carpet of wild flowers. Footfall increased substantially,
with several hundred visits a day and over 1,000 at weekends. The theft of equipment from the barn was said to be a blow, but in- surers agreed old petrol-driven machinery could be replaced with eco-friendly electric versions.
Church open LEEDS and Broomfield churches
have re-opened for “physical” ser- vices after months online. Rev Mark Pavey said: “There is no expectation of anyone to attend should they feel uncomfortable with concerns of safety.” Attendees must maintain social distance and wear a mask.
