Police move out of HQ to make way for homes
KENT Police will leave its Maid- stone headquarters this month so the site can be sold for housing. The chief constable and his se- nior team will move to Northfleet, while the rest of the staff of officers and backroom civilian employees will be housed at other parts of the force’s shrinking estate.
Kent Police claims the Sutton
Road HQ (right) no longer repre- sents value for money, although its training school will stay where it is. The county town’s police station remains in Palace Avenue. The decision to sell was made by the top brass and Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Scott, who faces re-election next year. Earlier this year, Kent Police Deputy Chief Officer Ian Drysdale said: “The chief constable and the commissioner have decided that the best way to continue to invest in the service the force offers the public is to sell the current head- quarters site and invest that money
back into other parts of our opera- tional policing estate and training school, which we remain commit- ted to retaining and improving. “The process will begin with the
force’s chief officer team relocating in September 2020 to North Kent Police Station in Northfleet, and will see all other departments cur- rently housed at the Sutton Road site relocated to other parts of the force’s estate in due course.”
Kent Police recently re-submit- ted proposals for 202 homes be- hind the HQ, covering 14 acres. They would see 90 dwellings con- structed behind the training school, off St Saviour’s Road, and 112 built behind the Sutton Road complex.
Proposals submitted to Maid- stone Borough Council also in- volve demolishing police homes in Weald Close.
