BUSINESS REPORT

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND

Chamber members Beyond Theory live by the mantra, ‘look after your people and they’ll look after your business’. The successful business

training and coaching consultancy, based in Derngate, Northampton, has gone from strength to strength in recent years, consistently increasing their portfolio of material, working with leading accreditation bodies to ensure the team are delivering courses of the highest quality, and creating the biggest impact on the lives of their expanding client base. Like all businesses, Beyond

Theory were faced with the dilemma of how to continue their work when lockdown was imposed, and with many of their courses being delivered face-to-face, all the team’s hard work, and hard- earned success, was put in jeopardy overnight. Founder Paul Beesley, a

former senior HR manager at Nationwide, said: “The Covid- 19 lockdown emphasised the social aspect of our working lives, and how with the right skillset, work is no longer about where you go, but what you do. When you unlock the potential within everyone, nothing should be a barrier to success.” Paul pivoted the business,

and immediately moved all training online. Working with global clients in different time zones meant Beyond Theory were used to working outside of the traditional 9-5 structure, and the team were able to accommodate this new way of working and deliver training at times to suit the clients. Beyond Theory also decided

to give the NHS and charities free bitesize sessions during lockdown, focusing particularly on change management and resilience training. In discussing the decision to discount their coaching, Paul continued: “At such a critical time, we knew that workers on the front-line, and in the hardest hit sectors, are the ones we rely on the most; they wouldn’t necessarily have the skills to successfully overcome the challenges facing them, and we were keen to help. People don’t forget how you make them feel.”

CAWLEYS APPOINTS OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

Despite the current impact lockdown is having on countless businesses across the region, Cawleys are extremely confident that they can bounce back and grow business volumes substantially. As such, the business is continuously looking to expand and evolve its offering and is delighted to announce the appointment of Nigel Ingram (pictured) as its new operations director. Nigel, who joined the business in May,

is responsible for developing and driving Cawleys’ strategy to deliver tangible results within the waste processing and commodities division.

His appointment is driven in-part by the news that

‘NIGEL BRINGS A WEALTH OF

Tony Goodman, Cawleys’ director of sales and resource management, will be taking retirement at the end of the year. Tony Goodman has been an invaluable member of the senior team at Cawleys for over 30 years and will be greatly missed. Nigel’s appointment, several months prior to Tony’s departure, will allow the two to work together to ensure knowledge share and a smooth transition for the business. Commenting on the appointment

EXPERIENCE TO OUR BUSINESS’

Phil Gudgeon, managing director, said: “Although it will be some months before Tony leaves the business, his departure will be felt widely across the organisation. Having worked in the waste sector for more than 20 years, Nigel brings a wealth of experience to our business. He has held senior roles at both Suez and Veolia and has demonstrated high

standards of performance and achievement in all his previous roles. We are greatly looking forward to welcoming him to the team and the positive impact we are sure he will have on our operation.” Cawleys is one of the UK’s leading independently

owned waste and resource recycling companies. The company ethos is ‘local recycling, global responsibility’ and the company celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2017.

The ‘hub and spoke’ office model refers to a more flexible workspace and working style. Unlike the traditional ‘headquarters’ model – in which a business operates from one large city centre head office – hub and spoke offices allow employees to work from either their city hub or a strategic regional spoke location. Here are the benefits that are converting businesses to this model post-pandemic.

SAVE YOUR BUSINESS MONEY Downsizing the city centre office in which you are based means you can open up strategically-placed smaller offices in more regional locations and still have money left over. Less square footage in the city results in lower overheads, rent and expenses – key to saving money in this climate.

GET FREEDOM THROUGH FLEXIBLE SPACE Now, more than ever, flexibility is vital for businesses. Shorter licence agreements, fewer T&Cs to sign on the dotted line, low risk and low hassle are just some benefits that come with flexibility. At BizSpace, we also offer customers the freedom of movement within our centres, providing them with the ability to upscale or downsize at short notice.

WORK LOCALLY, COMMUTE LESS AND INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY By producing a heatmap of where your employees live versus where they work currently, you can get an idea of the alternative areas that might work better for their operations. They will save precious time and money on their commute – and a better work/life balance for them could mean higher productivity and output for the business, aiding in its recovery.

GROW YOUR COMPANY FOOTPRINT Why stay in one location when your business could go further? A larger geographical footprint unlocks a broader audience and wider customer and client reach, vital for business longevity.

HIRE FROM A MUCH LARGER TALENT POOL The opportunity to hire talent from further afield is not one that comes with a centralised office, where businesses are confined to certain geographical compromises such as commute distance, time and cost. That means the individuals who hold the key for future success could be hired by competitors instead.

While the effects of the pandemic continue to challenge businesses up and down the UK, many are considering alternative and more flexible workspace options. Demand for regional offices is ever-increasing, even in this climate, so if you are considering a property change for your own business, the hub and spoke model might well be the direction to move towards in 2020 and beyond.
