MEMBER ZONE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
According to a recent survey by The Careers and Enterprise Company, 74% of teachers say employability skills are now the most important way to improve pupils’ career prospects. With 49% also fearing a lack of jobs for young people and damage to their career prospects as result of the pandemic. In response to Covid-19, we need now more
than ever to ensure the continued development of the talent pipeline in schools and colleges through employer engagement, ensuring our local young people have the skills, attitudes and behaviours sought by employers. To help us to achieve this, we invite you and like-
minded experienced people within your networks, to join us as Enterprise Advisers. Enterprise Advisers volunteer with schools to help them plan the best careers programmes by offering strategic guidance aiming for relevant, high impact provision in line with the labour market. Greg Kirkman, managing director of Ensafe
Consultants, joined SEMLEP’s Enterprise Adviser Network after reflecting on his own children’s routes into employment: “There are bright, willing, able and engaged young people out there that want to find out more about local careers. It’s down to us as business leaders to inspire them.” BBC Sports producer Micky Payne got
involved by giving an hour to share his experience of a career in media.
LOCKDOWN DOESN’T MEAN SLOWDOWN FOR ROTARY MK
24 October is World Polio Day and during that week Rotary MK will be planting 4,000 purple crocuses in MK to raise awareness that through a long, 30 year campaign of immunisation, Rotary International, together with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, have almost rid the world of Polio. Africa was declared Polio-free this June, and there’s just a handful of cases now in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Once the children have received their
immunisation, their little finger is dipped in purple dye, so they know who has received the two miracle drops of vaccine; hence the purple crocuses. The crocus corms will be planted in four different areas of Woughton. A scout troop will be helping with planting and the mayor will hammer home the important plaque explaining the End Polio message. In October and November the team will
be looking for swimming teams for the annual Swimathon, due to be held on 20 February in Wolverton pool. Rotary MK would love as many teams from fellow Chamber members to enter. The swimathon is a hugely successful annual event, raising over £25,000 in all, which is split between six or seven local charities.

He said: “When I was at school, you relied on
people taking an interest in your future, such as a teacher or your family. I want to ensure that today’s young people know what careers are out there. The more options you have, the better choices you end up making.” Young people who receive four or more
employer encounters while at school or college are significantly less likely to become not in education, employment or training (NEET) and will on average, earn more over their career. With schools and colleges set to go back in
