be salvaged go to waste, where they generate green energy instead of being landfilled. First Mile is at the forefront of its

sector and its innovative approach means they can recycle over 20 different types of material, from paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and food to plastic bags, coffee pods, textiles, lights bulbs and cooking oil.

RETAIL Sponsors: Inspired Energy Winners: Newlife - the Charity for Disabled Children The charity launched 30 years ago as a small operation from an industrial unit in Cannock expects to have a turnover of £13mi by 2022. It was launched by Mrs Sheila Brown, who has three sons, two of whom faced disability, and has dedicated her life to fighting for a better deal for disabled children. The not-for-profit operation has

directly improved the lives of more than 20,000 disabled and terminally ill children across the UK. More than 300 retailers, including River Island, Primark, Peacocks, The White Company and Amazon donate surplus items otherwise heading for landfill. Newlife, who now have several

stores including one in Digbeth, assess each item donated and it is either sold at a fraction of the original price, re-purposed or recycled.

SALES AND MARKETING Sponsors: O2 Winners: Gateley The legal and professional services firm credits its national marketing team, based in the heart of Birmingham, with an impressive contribution to its successes. The team of 31 professionals achieved a

key milestone when the firm was re-branded. The business had changed significantly and Gateley wanted to make a clear statement of their personality, people and culture. They transformed the group from

a traditional law firm to a legal and professional service group dedicated to “forward thinking and straight talking” and its success has been confirmed with a number of impressive awards, including UK Law Firm of the Year at last year’s British Legal Awards.

TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION Sponsors: METCloud Winners: TerraQuest Solutions Ltd The Broad Street-based firm is the UK’s largest specialist provider of land referencing services which deal with the research of ownership, occupation and rights over land subject to development. With innovation one of its

biggest strengths, they have developed a solution or software to drive every customer’s productivity and cost efficiencies. Clients have included HS2 and Heathrow Airport. In creating cutting edge

solutions, the firm’s developers completed a new solution that supports the delivery of asylum seekers in a £1bn contract for its parent company Mears Group plc. They credit staff as the key

component in achieving objectives along with social values aimed at making an even bigger positive impact to enhance their company image and achieve financial projections.

THIRD SECTOR Sponsors: South & City College Birmingham Winners: Suited for Success

The Birmingham charity is an innovative initiative supporting unemployed men and women with free clothing and interview coaching to get them through a successful job interview with confidence. From small beginnings, Suited

for Success has developed services by branching out into further strands of work to support specific client groups into employment, including ex-forces, ex-offenders and back-to-work mums. They have developed

partnerships with many businesses in Birmingham’s corporate sector that include donation drives, CSR volunteering and financial support. Their work was so successful that among accolades they received was the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION Sponsors: Palletways Winners: Birmingham City University Micro Placements Initiative This initiative offers flexible short- term work placements for a diverse range of students to help them become business-ready and support local businesses to grow and innovate by giving them access to young talent. Placements were arranged with

80 small businesses in sectors relevant to each student’s degree or career plans resulting in positive feedback from them and employers. The project was widened to

include undergraduates from the most deprived neighbourhoods. Bursaries were introduced after a pilot project highlighted finance as a potential barrier to student uptake. BCU invested over £100,000 in bursaries covering travel and other expenses.

JLR’s leading role in the development of electric and autonomous vehicles but still showing huge compassion to find the time to develop personal protection equipment for front- line NHS staff at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. JLR produced 2,000 3D-

printed protective visors a day using injection mould tooling supplied by WHS Plastics, of Sutton Coldfield. The operation produced one polypropylene headband every 30 seconds. Range Rover also deployed

360 vehicles to support front-line workers involved in emergency responses. The first Range Rover to be produced under social distancing rules rolled off the production line at Solihull in May. Mr Allen said: “I am delighted

to have this opportunity to present the President’s Award to JLR. The company remains at the heart of the region’s supply chains supporting around 260,000 UK jobs through its service providers, supply chain, R&D partners and own employees. “Innovation is at the heart of

what they do as they continue to invest in their UK manufacturing operations, particularly in relation to the new all-electric Jaguar XJ at Castle Bromwich and the next generation Range Rover in Solihull. “Even in these most difficult

times they continue to play a leading role in the development of electric and autonomous vehicles crucial to the success of the automotive industry within our region. “During the current pandemic

JLR has risen to the challenge in producing 3D protective visors for frontline staff and deploying their global feet to support emergency responders. “I am proud that this innovative

company is based here in the Midlands and this award is a recognition of its continued development and contribution to the region’s economy.” The award was accepted by

manufacturing executive director Grant McPherson following the retirement of operations director Jamie Whitehead.
