What does your company do? We assist companies to access government tax incentives and grants. We focus on Research and development, patent box, Creative Industries and Land Remediation claims, but we also undertake associated activities, such as setting up SEIS and EIS schemes.
How did it all start? My son and I started the company focused on large technical grants 25 years ago.
What’s your greatest achievement so far? Well that’s a difficult one – business is full of ups and downs and sometimes it’s the small wins as you come out of a down that stick with you. There have been many more ups recently though and these often come after talking with a new client who has been told they can’t do something or don’t qualify for a scheme; then get a big payout after talking with us. That’s always good.
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? Business is full of risks and you have to be bold to be successful.
What keeps you awake at night? Nothing – I sleep soundly.
If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? Nothing - I am happy and this is the result of the successes and failures I have had over the years.
What has surprised you most in your job? How often people take the first answer, especially if it is no.
What advice would you give to someone starting out? Stick at it and try hard. Things can be tough when you start a business, most businesses operate at a loss for the first few years and it can be disheartening. It is also
important to embrace technology at all levels. It is the future.
Which business do you most admire? So many to choose from. Of Birmingham business leaders I particularly admire Tim Andrews and Ninder Johal for their positive impact and tenacity.
What exciting projects is your business working on? So many! We are launching a new app soon though, so watch this space!
What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? Through great advocacy, information, networking and events. (MCS was one of the sponsors of the 2018 Chamber ‘Invest to Grow’ campaign, which was aimed at helping businesses boost productivity).
