We have a management board member, Major Rob Atchison, helping to ensure we continue to build this relationship. The injured ex-servicemen and women have been a strong inspiration to the young people – that feeling of competition, speed and teamwork is such a core part for them. “We hope to grow the opportunities for


these groups to progress and play as a team together, representing the charity and what polo can offer as a sport for change. If we can raise the funding it would be the first team of its kind,” said Vivek with understandable pride. Guards Polo Club’s role now is to lead the


way so that other clubs have the confidence to support disadvantaged children in their own areas through the power of polo. “We have finely tuned the model and have developed blueprints/templates so that every club in the UK can get involved,” Vivek revealed. “Charity changes perception so we need to keep charity at the forefront of some


of our key tournaments here at Guards Polo Club. We can do a variety of things to raise money throughout the year and if we are doing multiple things throughout the season people will feel more involved. For example if my team was to play the Archie David, the Duke of Wellington and the Phoenician and I donated £500 from each tournament entry to the charity I would feel that I was supporting this charity and would want to know more about it. I would get more of a sense of engagement and belonging.”

rom this initial step Vivek hopes that his fellow patrons will become mentors and help PoP in more practical ways, such as inviting


them to matches, giving the students access to their team professionals and looking at apprenticeship opportunities. Ultimately, Vivek has an even bigger goal in sight. “My aim is that polo will be the philanthropist, PoP the vehicle, Guards Polo Club the catalyst and a global audience who will benefit from the true impact of our motto – Change Your Line!” In addition Vivek would like to thank


Guards Polo Club Chairman and Board, the PoP trustees and board members for their ongoing support which is given entirely voluntarily, as well as the teams at Guards Polo Academy, Cool Hooves and Fifield and Druids Lodge Polo Clubs who have been on this journey with Vivek, Katy and the PoP team.

CASE STUDY


RONNIE KUSI Growing up in the Angell Estate in Brixton, Ronnie has a challenging background which has been heavily influenced by gang culture. When PoP first met Ronnie, he was understandably sceptical about what polo, the sport of kings, had to offer him or even what it was but was keen to change the direction of his life. Since playing polo and meeting many


role models in the polo community, Ronnie has been able to think of himself differently- as someone who has opportunities to succeed, to imagine a life away from local gangs and to start building towards that life. The connections he has made with the military have been very informative and he has begun his application to the army. In the meantime he is learning how to groom horses. Ronnie has since moved out of Brixton


and works for TalentRise a recruiting company. His determination to continue to distance himself from local gangs is a credit to him. He has embraced every opportunity that PoP has made available to him and PoP continues to support him. Ronnie is now not only an ambassador for the charity but also a mentor to younger participants in PoP programmes.
