FOREWORD

Chairman’s Foreword I

write this in very strange times. The world is slowly recovering from an unprecedented pandemic and every

country has been affected by Coronavirus. Polo might seem insignificant at a time like this but a study by PWC, jointly commissioned by the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) and this Club in 2018, revealed that of all sports played in the UK, polo has the highest impact for equivalent pounds spent compared to any other sport played. Of course polo does not command the absolute amount of revenue generated by sports such as football but this study did prove that polo punches far above its weight in its relative contribution to the UK economy. So your Board is doing all that is possible to ensure a safe and successful return to competitive polo at Guards Polo Club. The Club punches well above its weight

when it comes to charitable events too. Last year we raised more than £40,000 for the Scots Guards (pictured right) and £21,000 for our new ladies’ charity, Smart Works Reading. Other beneficiaries included UNICEF (in association with Access Bank), Macmillan Cancer Support, Power of Polo, Nicholls

Spinal Injury Foundation, PoloAfrica and Polo Pastures. This year will be equally impressive. We might have delayed our season but this has not stopped us fundraising already. The Club auctioned the first stick & ball session on the new Princes’ Ground, with funds shared between the incredible nurses at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough and the sadly overwhelmed The Dash domestic abuse charity. Once spectators are allowed to watch polo

we aim to host an NHS Day, supporting the NHS Charities Trust, offering a free day out at polo to all those who have worked so hard for us. In addition, our Royal Windsor sponsors, Out-Sourcing Inc, is supporting us in raising funds for healthcare here in the UK and in Japan. We have yet to confirm the

charity for this tournament but David Matsumoto has already signalled Out-Sourcing’s commitment to our fundraising initiatives. Many other sponsors and partners have

gone above and beyond during this crisis. Archie David Cup sponsor Hildon has been supporting its local NHS teams in Hampshire and in London through the Hildon Foundation. Meanwhile, Mosimann’s teamed up with CriticalNHS to provide meals for frontline workers at St George’s Hospital in London. Cartier and Out-Sourcing Inc. have shown

their unwavering support to this Club too. Both brands have signed an additional year to their existing contracts, guaranteeing their support to us until 2024. Such dedication is hugely appreciated and we thank Laurent Feniou and David Matsumoto and their respective colleagues for backing Guards Polo Club at such a crucial time. I would also like to personally thank all of

our playing and social members who have continued to pay their memberships. The team here at Smith’s Lawn, headed up by Chief Operating Officer James Neighbour and Polo Manager Antony Fanshawe and their respective staff, Tara Bown, Nicola Taylor, Tissy Sievwright, Pam Manku, Diana Butler and David Dickman, are inspired by such commitment. Special mention must be made of our Head Groundsman Peter Svoboda and his team. The new Princes’ Ground is in better condition than any of us dared hope and we all look forward to seeing matches being played on it sometime this season. After successfully implementing our HPA-

approved, Covid-19 regulations, we plan to play tournament polo, behind closed doors, from mid June. We hope spectators can join us later this season and with this year’s tournaments continuing into October, I believe that we will all have an opportunity to experience the very best of Guards Polo Club – on and off the field of play. In the meantime I would like to wish you all continued good health.
