Carnival for charity raises £24,000
The South West Tech Awards launched in May
Tech awards to honour heroes
Heroes who are helping as part of the nation’s response to the coronavirus pandemic will be honoured at this year’s Tech South West Awards. Launched with a live online event
on Friday 1 May, the annual awards cover Bath, Bristol, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire, recognising and celebrating talent, creativity, business success, education, leadership and diversity across the technology sector. This year, in response to the global
coronavirus pandemic, Tech South West will be announcing details of a special Hero Award to honour the work of tech organisations and individuals responding to the pandemic, and helping in innovative ways, as well as unveiling fundraising plans to support the World Health Organisation’s work to tackle the virus. Toby Parkins, Chair of Tech South
West, said: “These are incredibly tough times which is why we need to shine a light on the amazing work that tech organisations are doing right now. Whatever the economic consequences, and they are in many cases severe, it is clear that we are going to need technology and innovation to aid the recovery. Across the whole economy, the tech community in the South West will be pivotal to that work.” The awards are open for entries
until the 24 July. Enter at

Tech South West, said: “This year’s awards will pay tribute to people and organisations doing amazing things, in their particular specialism, or reaching out and helping others far and beyond their day-to-day work, in unprecedented times.”
As you’d expect from an event held by family-run firm Drakes Jewellers, this year’s Diamond Gala in aid of St Luke’s Hospice was a razzling, dazzling, sparkling success! With its colourful, fun-filled Rio
Carnival theme, the ball at the Crowne Plaza Plymouth was enjoyed by guests who kindly dug deep into their pockets for the raffle and auction prizes donated by generous local businesses. Together, they raised an
incredible £24,000, which will help St Luke’s make a difference to more local families going through the toughest of times. The ball – where guests were
entertained by dancers in feathered finery as well as an amazing band – was part of the 70th anniversary celebrations of Drakes Jewellers and the firm’s fourth supporting the charity, which is close to the heart of the family behind the popular business.
Monique Hirshman, Director of
Drakes Jewellers and organiser of the Diamond Gala, said: “It was a wonderful night and I want to thank everybody who made it such a success. There’s no greater gift than giving and the money raised will go a long way to supporting St Luke’s vital work across the community.” In total, this big-hearted
company has raised over £80,000 St Luke’s Hospice over the years.
