RESILIENCE & RECOVERY

lockdown its Sign Shop produced 1,295 signs including signage for ourselves and Plymouth City Council, South West Highways and University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. The team was put on furlough but has opened up again this week to cater for more signage for PCC. The sign made for University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust was a thank you banner to their staff and the Sign Shop also created rainbow signs for outside Plumer House (PCH’s headquarters in Crownhill) on one of Plymouth’s main roads.

University of Plymouth The University of Plymouth are working to design and manufacture a new series of recyclable face shields. Engineers at the University of Plymouth are

working alongside staff from Plympton-based Prestige Packaging to design and manufacture a new series of recyclable face shields. Currently undergoing full testing and

certification to ensure they meet BSI standards, 20,000 of the shields have been manufactured and are immediately available for procurement for use by healthcare workers. If there is sufficient demand, that number could rise to 100,000 a week. The finished products can then be supplied

directly to frontline workers in hospitals and other healthcare environments, but also used in shops, hairdressers and other settings as the Covid-19 lockdown begins to ease. The initiative was conceived by Dr Antony

Robotham, associate professor in mechanical engineering at the university. The finalised face shields are designed to provide eye and face protection against contamination from respiratory droplets and splashing of secretions.

Babcock International Group Plc Engineering and defence giant Babcock is making 10,000 ventilators for the NHS to use during the coronavirus crisis. The firm said it responded quickly to Prime

Minister Boris Johnson’s Ventilator Challenge and was awarded a contract by the Cabinet Office to manufacture 10,000 Zephyr Plus ventilators, subject to regulatory approvals. The product is being developed in collaboration with an established major international supplier of critical care ventilators. As well as working on a new prototype, a team of Babcock engineers and specialists set up a supply chain solution from scratch, and enlisted a number of UK manufacturers to help with the assembly and production. Babcock Marine have designed a new bracket

which will enable full-face PPE visors to be attached to safety helmets for aircrew. Until recently there was no approved mechanism to secure the visors to aviation helmets.
