RESILIENCE & RECOVERY
Unique role offers opportunity to support Plymouth’s waterfront
R
ecruitment is now underway for a unique role supporting businesses across Plymouth’s impressive
waterfront. Plymouth Waterfront Partnership Business
Improvement District (PWP BID) is looking for a new Waterfront Manager and Chief Executive to help unlock the area’s full potential and shape the city’s future. The BID represents around 900 businesses
along the waterfront, including in the historic Barbican and Sutton Harbour, Royal William Yard, Plymouth Hoe and Mount Batten areas. Since 2012, it has delivered two five-year business plans including 70 projects that aim to attract more visitors, create attractive places and reduce business costs. Chair of PWP, Nick Buckland OBE, said:
“We’re looking for an energetic and highly competent individual to deliver our successful Business Improvement District, whilst engaging
with and supporting businesses through these extraordinary times. We need a new vision for the waterfront that embeds collaboration and innovation at its heart, working in lock-step with Resurgam, the city’s wider Covid-19 recovery plan.” PWP works closely with
key city partners, including Plymouth City Council, Destination Plymouth and the neighbouring Plymouth City Centre Company BID. Council leader Tudor Evans
‘We’re looking
for an energetic and highly competent individual’
OBE said: “The waterfront is the jewel in Plymouth’s crown and its home to a fantastic line-up of businesses. “So much has been achieved in partnership
with PWP over the past ten years, but there’s more to be done and we’re looking for the right person who can drive the BID forward –
especially during these incredibly difficult times, when businesses need all our support more than ever.” The BID is currently three years through its second five-year term which ends March 2022. The role profile asks for an
enthusiastic, experienced and dynamic manager that can lead the BID team forward. The ideal candidate will have previous
experience of working in a BID or town centre management role. It’s also crucial that they have the ability to engage with key stakeholders,
develop effective relationships and provide strategic and operational management.

Online portal offers sense of community
An online community portal has been created for The Chestnut Appeal, devoted to helping male cancer patients in response to the coronavirus outbreak. The Chestnut Appeal supports
men who are recovering, currently in treatment, or recently diagnosed with prostate, penile and testicular cancers. The portal, made by Plymouth
Science Park-based Made with Maturity, enables The Chestnut Appeal team to easily engage with male patients who would have previously attended support groups before the coronavirus outbreak. It also provides men who may feel particularly isolated and vulnerable at this time to get connected, and access help and support. The site allows visitors to join
weekly video support groups, find up to date information in the FAQs, engage with other peers through the forum and submit requests for help and support. The portal is easy to use for those who are technology adverse. Lesley-Ann Simpson, Charity
Director at The Chestnut Appeal, said: “I am so pleased that we've managed to get this online portal
14 Chamber Profile Summer 2020
launched. Cancer hasn’t stopped, the support men need hasn’t stopped and our services haven't stopped either, but the way we interact with each other has had to change. “The Chestnut Appeal for men’s
health is here for you, so please keep in touch, please use this online portal and let's get this online community growing. I would
also like to say a massive thank you to Clare and Ben from Made with Maturity who pulled out all the stops to make this happen.” Made with Maturity is now
offering the online community portal as a product which can be purchased and deployed within a few days for other charities, and commercial organisations.
The firm’s Account Director Clare
Stirling said: “We have thoroughly enjoyed working collaboratively with Lesley-Ann and the team from The Chestnut Appeal to develop the community portal. “Lesley-Ann approached us with
concerns that they weren’t able to easily reach their vulnerable patients and needed to get something in place quickly to support those in need. Through working together, the features were defined, evolved and developed which has resulted in the live portal. “All credit to The Chestnut
Appeal for taking the lead in adapting and getting online during the Covid-19 outbreak. We are now pursuing different avenues to explore if the portal is useful for similar organisations.” Fay Davies, Business
Development Manager at Plymouth Science Park, said: “This is one of many examples of how our tenants are responding with speed and agility to the current climate. I’d like to congratulate both The Chestnut Appeal and Made with Maturity on creating the portal so quickly and effectively.”
