This is one of the ways staff at Redwings Horse Sanctuary have been keeping their spirits up, as they continue to care for the charity’s 1,500 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules at this exceptionally challenging time.


In light of the Government’s restrictions on movement in March, Redwings closed its five visitor centres across the UK, including Redwings Oxhill. However, behind closed doors, its teams have still been providing the specialist care their residents need, whilst adapting the ways they work to ensure they remain safe.


Measures introduced have included restructuring the rotas of both the vet and equine care teams to reduce the number of people at the Sanctuary’s sites, regularly disinfecting farm vehicles, PPE and shared spaces, and avoiding sharing equipment, on top of social distancing. They are even using bicycles to travel to the horses to

Office staff, who are now working from home where possible, have also been deployed to help with basic tasks, such as filling haynets and cleaning water tanks, to support the care teams if people need to self-isolate or care for young children.


In line with guidance from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA), the vet team has focussed its work on emergency cases and essential routine care, allowing many to work “on call” from home and to cut back on travel.


Yet, while they work hard themselves, the teams have also been finding ways to support key workers in our health and care services. With all routine surgical procedures at Redwings’ Horse Hospital suspended, the charity has donated half of its oxygen tanks for use in NHS hospitals to help patients fighting Covid-19. Redwings has also suspended its Guardianship Scheme, sadly at a time when enquiries are usually at their highest and just as the first horses to be trained at Redwings Oxhill’s new rehoming centre were ready to find loving
