This is a useful checklist for all yards to have:
group horses within a traffic light system. This system is oſten used in Strangles control, however can be adapted for use with any infectious disease.
If it isn’t possible to designate staff to each group, then staff should start with the green group first, then amber, then red, using appropriate PPE, foot dips, gloves, equipment, and changing these between groups. Yards vary in design and staffing levels, so it is important to work together with your vet to come up with a tailor-made plan to tackle the problem. Visiting owners must be given clear instructions as to which parts of the yard they may enter, use disinfectant gels and foot-dips, and should have no contact with any other horse besides their own.
Biosecurity Checklist: a Isolate new arrivals to the yard for at least three weeks. a Check the vaccination status of all horses. a Train staff to recognise signs of ill health. a Keep up to date records for each horse. a Implement effective rodent control. a Clean and disinfect stables between occupants. a Disinfect transport between horses. a Call a vet if a horse shows signs of sickness and isolate the horse until the vet arrives.
a Wear separate protective clothing and footwear when working with isolated horses.
a Use foot dips, wash hands frequently and use disinfectant gel.
a Implement strict rules about who can access the isolation unit, no one should be walking through it unnecessarily.
Finally, we recommend downloading the free EquiBioSafe App, which gives huge amounts of useful information on equine disease and biosecurity measures.
