Vaulting horses The horse is arguably the most important part of any vaulting team. The horse also accounts for 25% of the overall score; they are marked in a similar way to the collectives at the bottom of a dressage test. The quality of canter is extremely important for a top level vaulting horse, and for this reason most horses at the top level will be warmblood or sport horse types. Most vaulting horses are quite tall. The English Vaulting Squad’s horses range in size from 16.3hh to over 19hh, this allows space for the vaulters to move and perform without impeding the horse.
Having said that, any horse can be used for vaulting, especially at grassroots level where many classes are in walk. The most important attribute for a “walk” horse is a good temperament and steady, rhythmical walk. Horses must be over five years of age to carry an individual, and over seven years of age for a team. Apart from this there are no restrictions on height or breed. The horse must, of course, be strong enough to carry the vaulters and for this reason it is rare to see ponies used for vaulting. Our horses need to be well schooled on the flat; they will usually be schooled twice a week to keep them supple and level, which improves the quality of their canter. They tend to be used for vaulting a maximum of 3 times a week. In training they will work on both reins, but in competition at the top levels they only go to the leſt,
