Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue Centre Updates
WHHR continues its commitment during the COVID-19 crisis
to make a difference in the lives of horses. These unprecedented times are no different. As a result of
Covid-19, the following decisions have been made with much con- sideration for public safety and dialogue with authorities. 1 - WHHR Summer Extravaganza scheduled on July 11, 2020 will be cancelled. Stay tuned for our upcoming online fundraiser to assist the rescue with this great financial loss. 2 - Adoption interviews will be postponed until May 31, 2020. Stay Tuned as we are launching a new adoption platform that will start on May 1, 2020 featuring many of our adoptable horses! During the month of May we will still be accepting applications
on our website
www.whhrescue.com and matching adoptees so that as soon as adoption interviews commence, we will be ready to go! 3 - Volunteer Reduction. Our work continues to keep the farm oper- ational while striving to protect the health and well-being of those around us. In order to achieve this, we have reduced our volunteer base to the same individuals that come multiple days to reduce the risk, while practising social distancing. We are still accepting volunteer applications online and will set
up a volunteer orientation as soon as it is safe to do so. We thank those assisting us during these challenging times. Now more than ever, our horses need you.

From Our Founder
Remembering March/April 1986
Quarterama ‘86 was boasting in a front page editorial that this show was the largest ever with over 3,300 entries. Well it was a tremendous show. I was there.
The Rider had two jammed pack sections in our Quarterama ‘86 Edition. We were loaded with Stallion ads. Today we wonder where all the stallions have gone. There was so much going on in the Western Horse industry that we just can’t fit it all into this col- umn.
The All American Quarter Horse
Congress took out a full page color advertisement on the 1986 Congress.
Tassilo, another one of my favourite Quarter Racing Horses, was being advertised at stud. His racing winnings were in excess of $116,000 in 1986 money.
The AQHA announced that Cut- ter Animal Health was offering a $5,000 scholarship for
the
AQHA High Point All Round Youth. Cutter had a full page full colour advertisement in this edi- tion.
Tack Town in Baldwin, Ontario were advertising their Second Anniversary in The Rider.
The Rider announced that the rate of Colic surgery survival in horses had improved ten fold.

Help the CARD Herd-A staff
campaign appeal The Community Association for
Riders with Disabilities (CARD) is in the midst of an important campaign appeal: To help with the costs of feeding and car- ing for their herd of therapy horses. The CARD staff has been working
diligently in sending out appeals in their quest to provide the CARD horses with some of these most basic needs...hay/vet services/farrier services/grain, supple- ments and bedding costs. CARD’s mission is to provide
quality therapeutic riding programs for children and adults with disabilities. Due to current events the programs, fundrais- ing, and events have all stalled and we are appealing to those in the community who are caring, able and willing, to help with any of these necessary expenses. We know these times are difficult
for many, yet, if you or anyone in your community are able to find a way to help we will truly appreciate it. Please go to our website:

UCO announced that John S. Black of Markdale, Ontario was elected President at their Decem- ber Board Meeting.
Frontier Saddlery of Stouffville announced their 5th Anniversary Sale on Easter Weekend.
WHAO advised that they were holding their Annual Spring Meeting at Gullivers Travels in Stoney Creek on April 4. You might remember the mural in there. It was painted by Count Alexander Von Svoboda, a Quar- ter Horse breeder and OQHA Board member.

Uxbridge Horsemen’s Association COVID-19 Changes and Adjustments
made the final decision to cancel the 2020 Uxbridge Fall Fair. This is a real blow to the
ber 2019 to support EC sanctioned hunter/jumper competitions in complying with a new rule requiring safety cups with breakaway track systems in all competition and warm-up rings. It provides reimburse- ments of up to $3,000 CAD per competition venue for the purchase of FEI approved jump cups and breakaway track systems. The suspension of EC sanctioned com-
WHAO were advertising their Extravaganza in Paris, Ontario on June 20 22. They knew how to advertise to get people out. No Moccasin Express or Grapevine advertising for them. Today we call it social media. We can look back 50 years and see everything that happened by looking at physical copies of The Rider. You can’t do that on social media. We are still your best avenue to suc- cess.
The Rider had a story on the passing of Lillian Southward, a loving mother and a super volun- teer at many horse shows. She was a power house in the early days of the western horse.
A big announcement in The Rider about the formation of the Canadian Snaffle Bit Associa- tion.
