however it might unfold as this crisis continues. Currently, all our races to the end of June are can-
celled or postponed and we’ll continue to re-schedule as the government directives progress. Please watch the Events page on our website for updates and follow us on the Ontario Extreme Cowboy Club Facebook page to keep in touch. The OXC membership are a wonderful and di- verse group of horse enthusiasts brought to- gether by this versatile sport; we excel at cheering each other on whether we’re at a race or in our own unique challenges. We are a family and we hope you will join us! The OXC is planning some
fun and skill-enhancing activities over the next few months of isolation and social distancing including virtual Fun Run Races, training tips and on-line challenges. If you’re lucky, you have your horse on your property and are able to continue working with them and enjoying their presence in your life. But even if you’re separated, you can still join our activities; for exam- ple we’re continuing the EXCA tradi- tion of Stick Horse racing (including brooms and pool noodles, of course!) in some of our Fun Run virtual races. sport, OXC Board Member and competitor, Karen Dallimore recently shared this de- scription on her Horse Basics Facebook page. The OXC is a sanctioned affiliate of the Extreme Cowboy Association (EXCA) founded by Texas cowboy Craig Cameron and now recognized around the world. As EXCA Head Judge, Pete Fraser explains, each race is like a job interview. The judge is the ranch boss and you’ve got 13 obsta- cles in a closed arena that simulate ranch tasks; they need to be done efficiently and quickly as if you’ve done them a thousand times. If you can demonstrate good horse- manship while doing these tasks, you’re more likely to get hired since a sound, fit, well-handled horse is a key partner in your work. And if you can do it with a good at- titude, you’re the kind of person that the boss will want to work with all day. Here in Ontario you won’t likely find
live cattle in our races but you may find the odd giant teddy bear on a toboggan. All
breeds are welcome; backgrounds in all disciplines bring their own unique skills to the course and some of the entry-level di- visions permit English tack. It’s all meant to be safe, fun, and to demonstrate your skills. Please follow us on Facebook and
watch this column next month for Extreme Cowboy tips and training exercises, and we’ll keep you up-dated on our up-coming virtual activities too! The OXC also wants to extend our
gratitude for the work and dedication of all the frontline workers from healthcare to food production and distribution, and our hearts go out to those grieving or ill due to this terrible virus. Keep safe and well. We look forward
to when we can all gather and race again. Tracy Galvin
