successful. Do I need to supply recipient mares?

If you cannot supply your own recipient mares there are a number of well-maintained herds around the UK that supply mares for this specific purpose.

What are the chances of success?

The success rate of transfer is usually about 70%. It is important to follow up with subsequent pregnancy examinations as some recipient mares do not stay pregnant to term with the majority of these losing their pregnancy prior to 50 days. This is more likely to occur when using older donor mares and when the embryo transferred is of a lower grade.

How much does it cost? At OVH the price can be broken down into 6 areas:-

1. Monitoring & Insemination of the donor mare - Fresh or Chilled semen = £240 (+ VAT) Frozen semen = £340 (+ VAT)

2. Synchronisation of the recipient mares - £250 each (+ VAT)

3. Embryo flush and search of the donor mare - £225 (+ VAT)

4. Transfer to the recipient mare - £150 (+ VAT) 5. Pregnancy scan x 3 - £48 (+ VAT) each 6. In foal fee - £200 (+ VAT)

In addition, you can expect to pay around £1800 for the hire of a recipient mare for 18 months (or until time of weaning).
