DH: Why did you want to become a Naturopathic Physician? JA: My passion for medicine began because of my daughter
who has a rare disease. After taking her to see countless doctors, who never seemed to go beneath the surface of her condition, I naturally became frustrated. Then one day, I took my daughter to an eye doctor who impressed me so much I asked him to treat my motion sickness and somnolence while reading. After treating me for six months and having me bombard him with question af- ter question, the doctor said to me, “You know, you would make a great therapist.” To underline his point, he gave me a signed copy of a book he’d written, and offered me a job. I seized the opportunity and entered a pre-med program for Optometry, later transitioning into Naturopathy.
DH: What sets you apart from other practitioners in the naturo- pathic field?
JA: My approach involves a lot of scientific testing, probably far more than any other naturopath or primary care physician I know. I cast my net wider and dig a lot deeper to make sure I get to the root cause of my patient’s health problems. I examine the whole body, diet and lifestyle to find treatments that work.
DH: What types of services do you offer? JA: The solutions and services I offer my patients include
nutritional advice, functional medicine and acupuncture. I do comprehensive stool, organic acid, heavy metal, mycotoxin and environmental toxicity testing. I do far-reaching nutrition and comprehensive hormone evaluations, cortisol included. I also do Methylation (genetic) testing, as well as food sensitivity, neu- rotransmitter, and energy metabolism testing.
DH: What can patients expect from working with you?
JA: Patients who come to see me can expect to undergo a fair amount of individualized specialty testing in the beginning. I always explain to patients that treatments based on scientific data will not only help them get better faster, they also save time and money in the long run.
New patients are asked to complete a HIPAA compliant questionnaire on my fully secure patient portal. I encourage them to share any other tests and health information they may have. I go over everything they submit, at no charge, prior to their first visit where we together establish which test package they should do.
DH: What plans do you have for the future for your practice?
JA: My hope for the future of my practice is that I will sim- ply continue to treat patients in the best way possible. I value quality over quantity and love studying so I’m continually striv- ing to improve my personalized, deep-dive approach to healing.
DH: Tell us about the best memory you have about being a holis- tic practitioner.
JA: The best memory I have involves my first ever patient. He came to me for help with pain management and associated blood pressure problems while I was still an intern. We were able to reduce his pain levels from 8 to 2 within two weeks just by changing his diet. He came back to see me after I graduated so that we could work on the root cause of his problem and I am still treating him today.
