CILIP’S Academic and Research Librar- ies Group (ARLG) is holding its annual conference – Working Smarter in a Time of Change – at Teesside University’s Darling- ton Campus on 3 and 4 June. The conference will cover information liter-

acy; UX marketing and promotion; resources (staffing & budgets); measuring impact; sup- porting research; and collection development and management. Speakers include Katherine Schopflin, author of Practical Knowledge and Information Management; CILIP President David Stewart; and Jisc’s subject specialist (libraries and digital resources), Lis Parcell. Full programme details and booking information is available at https://bit.ly/2Gh3vNI.

M&S ups its data science game

MARKS & Spencer is recruiting a head of data science to introduce machine learning to several areas of the business. As well as designing a data science roadmap, the chosen candidate will build a data science team of 15 to 20 people. The high street retailer set out its digital transformation plan in 2018 and set up a data academy focused on offering its employees an 18-month data science skills training programme to help the company compete with the likes of Amazon and Ocado.

8 INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL

Living Knowledge Network FOLLOWING a successful two-year pilot, the British Library is rolling out its Living Knowledge Network, a collaboration of library services that explores new ways for librar- ies across the country to work as one, increasing public impact and knowledge exchange. The pilot, funded by Arts Council England, included the Harry Potter: A History of Magic exhibition which toured 40 librar- ies attracting more than 775,000 visitors. Liz Jolly, Chief Librarian of the British

Library, said: “The Living Knowledge Net- work has had an extraordinarily successful pilot phase of growth and discovery. I am delighted to launch the Network today, surrounded by our partners and sector experts, in the spirit of collaboration and exchange in which it was founded.” Working with 22 public library partners and the national libraries of Scotland and Wales, the nationwide partnership will work collaboratively on creating unique services and memorable experiences for the Network’s audiences and share skills and resources for professional development. Knowledge and skills sharing development

for library professionals have included the network’s UK public library leaders meeting counterparts from the Library Society of China in a two-day knowledge sharing forum. And the network has also worked in partnership with Clore Leader- ship to host cultural leadership develop- ment days for library professionals. On the library impact side, there have been developments with touring exhibitions, the

latest being the newly commissioned poetry and spoken-word in collabora- tion with Poet in the City, culminating in a library late takeover at Leeds Central Library. Also launching now is Writing: Making Your Mark, pop-up exhibitions opening in over 20 Living Knowledge libraries around the country on 26 April. Future work includes expanding the strategic touring programme, Collections in Verse, to Sheffield and Newcastle and live screening selected cultural events from both the British Library’s public programme and Hay Festival in Living Knowledge Network partner libraries. To date, over one million people have engaged with Living Knowledge Network exhibitions, events and live screenings of cultural activities. Dr John Scally, National Librarian and Chief Executive of National Library of Scotland, said: “As founding partners, we have been pleased to see the progress made during the pilot phase, and look for- ward to seeing this network continue to grow, bringing together best practice in all parts of the UK.”

Pedr ap Llwyd, Chief Executive and

Lib rarian from The National Library of Wales, said: “The National Library of Wales has played a key role in the implementation of Welsh Government strategies for public libraries during the past decade and more. A collaborative approach has yielded great results in Wales and the Living Knowledge Network gives us a great opportunity to learn from other nations and share our own experiences in an UK-wide context.”

Join in Children’s Art Week

CHILDREN’S Art Week takes place next month, and libraries are being asked to get involved.

Organisers want to see more libraries taking part this year and have lined-up children’s authors and illustrators to help spread the message – including Nick Sharratt and Lauren Child.

Participating libraries can reach new audiences according to Jane Sillis of Children’s Art Week, who says: “Much of

Children’s Art Week takes place in areas of low cultural engagement, encouraging participation with audiences that do not otherwise enter their local cultural venues. Throughout Children’s Art Week’s history, almost two thirds of participating venues reached new audiences, and nearly one third reached children and young people who had never previously participated in out-of-the-classroom arts activities.” To take part visit https://bit.ly/2Ix6yE6.
