Using KM techniques in an after-action review


After completing work on the NHS Knowledge Mobilisation Framework e-learning programme, Alison Day and Alison Potter explain how they carried out an after action-review using knowledge mobilisation techniques to identify learning to share with others.


HEALTHCARE is a knowledge indus- try and transformation, effi ciency and innovation in the NHS depend upon shared learning and eff ective use of evidence and knowledge. A suite of e-learning modules introduc- ing the benefi ts of various knowledge management techniques was created in 2018 to encourage more people in the NHS to use knowledge manage- ment in their daily practice. The NHS Knowledge Mobilisation Framework e-learning programme1


was


launched on the e-learning for Healthcare Platform in September 2018. The modules are designed to help individuals working in health and care to develop skills to mobilise knowledge eff ectively in their organisations. The framework aims to help them to learn before, during and after everything that they do, so that best practice is replicated and pitfalls can be avoided.


The project came from a new emphasis on using knowledge management techniques within the health service, a central tenet of Knowledge for Healthcare framework.2 Existing e-learning on knowledge manage- ment, produced in 2010 by the Department of Health, Connecting for Health Knowl- edge Management Team and the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Library and Knowledge Services Team, required updating and this was the original brief for the project group. Keen to try one of the knowledge mobili- sation techniques, as Project Lead, (Alison D) and Learning Technologist (Alison P), we carried out our own after-action review at the end of the project to identify learning
