All kinds of libraries should promote scientifi c material
AN earlier version of this book appeared in 1994 under the title Sci- ence en Bibliothèques – since then the internet has altered information provision signifi cantly. It is timely to revisit the subject calling upon an impressive array of distinguished French librarians drawn from national, special and academic libraries to contribute the 30 chap- ters.
Books from this publisher can always be relied upon to delve deeply into their subjects, providing an informed philosophical and historical background of the topic alongside current thinking on all aspects of collection management. -commendable overview of contemporary French scien- tifi c publishing.
Whilst this is intended pri- marily for a French audience it has great international relevance and its overall message is to encourage all kinds of libraries to promote scientifi c material. Far from dwelling on the world of serial subscriptions, databases and information retrieval, this paints a broad canvas looking at everything, from provision for very young children to catering to the needs of advanced research. The result is a readable and informative discourse which provides plenty of food for thought.

ARE you new to staff supervision? Perhaps you are embarking on your fi rst supervisory or man- agement role and need a little guidance as you tackle staff discipline, motivation and evaluation. If this de- scribes you, then this may just be the book for you. Beth McNeil has written a gentle, thorough overview of how to get the best from your staff , whether you are working in a small library or managing a team within a larger organisation. Through the use of narra- tives of two new supervisors, one promoted from within an organisation and the other hired from outside, McNeil illustrates the challenges that may be faced in library settings as we grapple with the ideas of maintaining outstanding services in an age of economic challenges while negotiating the challenges of offi ce politics. Organised in three overar- ching themes of supervising individuals, managing groups and leading organisations, McNeil breaks down the vari- ous tasks required to create a successful library staff . Whether you are reading this volume in preparation for a new role or are dipping in and out as issues arise, the table of contents will signpost you quickly to the information you are looking for and each chapter includes a variety of tables, fi gures, sum- mary and notes that provide additional support.
