elcome to the latest issue of Information Professional – the leading print and digital magazine for and about all information professionals.
As you will have noticed, this month’s issue comes
with our new supplement Pen&inc. that focuses on diversity and inclusion in children’s publishing. We are hugely excited by the potential of Pen&inc. to bring about meaningful change – opening up opportunities for illustrators and authors, and giving children of all backgrounds and abilities the chance to choose books that refl ect their own lives and experiences. On a practical level, it includes hundreds of diverse and inclusive titles – please do read it, and use it where you can to support your own library’s inclusivity work. The need for diversity is not limited to the books we read, and as a profession we have recognised that we could do more. This year’s CILIP Conference in Manchester has a stream devoted to diversity and inclusion and April saw the fi rst meeting of a new Steering Group for CILIP’s BAME Information Professional’s Network. Hong-Anh Nguyen is playing a part in both the steering group and Conference 2019, and in this month’s IP (pp. 16-18) she speaks about why we all have a responsibility to change workplace cultures. Tom Steinberg, digital transformation lead at the National Lottery Heritage Fund, looks at why organisations need to have a digital strategy that is focused on user experience (pp. 20-22). This, according Tom, is another issue where culture change is hugely important. It is about people and skills as much as it is about technology. Rosie Veitch, Community Participation Offi cer for Cambridgeshire Libraries, brings people and technology together for a digital arts and creative ageing workshop (pp. 26-29). Digital artist Jason Wilsher- Mills led groups of new users through the process of creating their own art using just an iPad and some free apps.
Clinical librarian Katie Barnard explains how a visit to Nepal as part of a research team studying antenatal care has brought about new insights, at home and abroad. As part of North Bristol NHS Trust’s Women and Children’s Health Research Unit, the trip and work there has given her a deeper understanding of research in clinical settings. It’s a fascinating reminder that professional development is a contin- uous process and can happen in the unlikeliest of places (pp. 32-34). Rachel Heydecker and Andy Wright of the Carnegie UK Trust share case studies from a joint project with Wellcome Trust that has allowed public libraries to explore innovative health and wellbeing projects (pp. 36-39). Laura Cummings looks to the future at the Libraries for Change conference in Leipzig (pp. 42-44), and we have the usual mix of news and Insights from our regular columnists. I hope you enjoy reading this month’s edition, and as always do send us your comments and feedback.
