Mobile library data project

LIBRARY services running mobile librar- ies are being asked to join a scheme that makes information about them more visible and useful.

The Mobile Library Data Project is part of Libraries Hacked and aims to centralise information about timetables and routes. Dave Rowe, who runs Libraries Hacked, says 12 – out of around 80 – library services have so far indicated an interest. He said: “I’d like to invite library services to help in creating a free and open-source software solution to hold data on mobile library stops, routes, and timetables.” For more details on how to take part,

Winner Lisa Heathfield with pupils at this year’s award ceremony. Book prize worth thousands

for UK and Irish school libraries ONE lucky school library could win £5,000 of National Book Tokens in an an- nual competition that makes its return this month.

National Book Tokens will hand a prize worth £5,000 or €5,000 to a school in the UK or Ireland, in a draw made from nom- inations by parents, teachers, or librar- ians – in fact any UK or Ireland resident can vote for a school. More than 180,000 votes have been cast in previous competi-

tions, with Holly Park Primary school in North London and Glasgow’s Killermont Primary School winning in previous years. Lisa Bywater, National Book Tokens’ Marketing Manager, said: “this annual prize gives us the chance to make a very real difference to one school library, and the hundreds of children for whom it will – and should – be a vital, and inspiring, resource.” Enter at www.nationalbooktokens.com/schools.

Concorde Book Award names double winners

THE Concorde Book Award has delivered double winners for the first time in its history. The award, which is voted for by young people in South Gloucestershire’s public and private schools, has gone to Karen M. McManus for One Of Us is Lying and Lisa Heathfield for Paper Butterflies. The winners were chosen from a shortlist of six in a vote by pupils who have been taking part in reading groups. Hundreds of pupils took part and joint winner Lisa Heathfield said: “I’m incred- ibly honoured to have won the Concorde Book Award 2019, particularly as it was voted for by teen readers. And it was such a special event – meeting the fan-

tastic students and sharing their love of books. I spend my days writing away at my kitchen table, so it really is a dream come true to hear their love for Paper Butterflies.”

The award is designed to promote a love of reading for 11- to 14- year olds, and they have input from start to finish – from nominating and choosing the longlist to writing reviews and picking the eventual winner – or in this year’s case,

winners. All shortlisted books

are made available through public and school libraries in the district and vot- ing takes place on World Book Day each year. l http://concorde2019.edublogs.org
