CAMPING & HOLIDAY PARKS 2020

Pamper yourself during your camping trip with a spa treatment at the world-famous Évian-les-Bains

by legendary critic Curnonsky. Michelin restaurants, drool-worthy markets and the unique bouchons – small restaurants serving traditional local cuisine, such as andouillettes, pike quenelles and gâteaux de volaille – make this a (perhaps rather meaty) gourmand’s dream come true. Of course, if you’re in the Alps, you won’t get far without being tempted by an oozing dish of raclette. Rustic or refined, whatever’s on your menu, you’ll want something to wash it all down with. Cue a dégustation at the Côtes du Rhône vineyards, most famous for their Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where you can meander your way along no fewer than 14 wine routes!

Rural and sparsely populated, Auvergne is known for its skiing, hiking, horse riding and cycling, as well as its mineral-rich hot springs, which have produced spa towns such as Vichy. The capital is Clermont-Ferrand, worth a visit for its black cathedral alone. Made from lava stone, the twin spires of Notre-Dame-de- l’Assomption de Clermont-Ferrand can be seen far and wide and, unsurprisingly, it’s a monument historique. Where did the stone come from to build it? The Chaîne des Puys, of course, the impressive string of dormant volcanoes awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. We recommend a guided cycling tour if you’re fit enough (though e-bikes are a fantastic option to help you on your way). It’s a truly fabulous way to see this unique landscape. With all these outdoorsy delights, you’re bound to

have worked up an appetite, and Auvergne’s larder won’t disappoint, with some fantastic cheeses (Tomme de Savoie, Reblochon, Abondance...), AOP Puy lentils and cured meats. Not posh enough? Don’t you worry – there’s a clutch of restaurants boasting a Michelin star, if you fancy ditching the walking boots and getting dolled up. ■
