CAMPING & HOLIDAY PARKS 2020

Nouvelle-Aquitaine

France’s largest region covers all of your heart’s desires, from mountains to the sea

MIGHTY Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the largest of France’s regions, covering one eighth of the country. It spans the south-west of the Hexagon and encompasses a hit parade of tourist spots, such as Biarritz, Arcachon, Île de Ré, Poitiers, Saint-Émilion… too many to mention here! Lush forests, sparkling islands, sandy beaches, magnificent mountains and serene lakes – campers really are spoilt for choice here. Oh, and it’s also home to one of the most famous and admired wine regions in the world: Bordeaux. For a spot of history and culture, there are plenty of

fascinating cities to explore, such as picturesque Bayonne with its historic buildings and cobbled streets, beautiful Poitiers with its many bell-towers or comic-strip capital Angoulême. For natural wonders, there are forests, regional parks and the world-renowned prehistoric Lascaux Cave, with its astonishing paintings (discovered accidentally in 1940 by an 18-year-old boy and his chums who were searching for his dog, Robot, who fell down a hole).

Aquitaine sweeps along the Atlantic coast right

down to the Pyrénées and enjoys long, sunny summers, perfect for a spot of outdoor living en famille. One of its most famous départements is the Dordogne, with its magnificent river and sweeping valleys. Here you will find stunning hilltop medieval towns, colourful markets and lush, dense forests. Bursting with must-see sites, one of our favourites is the sacred city of Rocamadour, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a high spot (literally, rising 120m up a cliff) on the Way of St. James. Or perhaps you’d like to take in one of the 1,500 castles, which earn the Dordogne the nickname ‘the other châteaux country’. Oenophiles will want to head to the Gironde, home

to many world-famous wines. Follow one of the wine routes and stop off at some of the numerous friendly and informative vineyards for a tour and tasting. Over in the Landes, you’ll find the pine Forêt des

Landes, the largest in Europe with plenty of wonderful campsites, from big, family-friendly affairs to smaller,

Collonges-la-Rouge was declared a historic monument in 1942 10
