History meets the great outdoors in this beautiful and fascinating part of the country


PAYS DE LA LOIRE, sitting to the south of Brittany and Normandy, is made up of five départements: Loire Atlantique, the Vendée, the Mayenne, the Sarthe and the Maine-et-Loire. It’s an idyllic destination for campers, with plenty of


charming countryside spots to choose from, as well as the Atlantic coast. History, art, hiking or canoeing – whatever your pastime preferences, it makes for a great holiday destination. Along the coast, fall for the allure of resorts La Baule and Le Croisic and explore the salt marshes where the famous sel de Guérande comes from. The medieval town of Guérande, one of France’s Villes et Pays d’Art et d’Histoire, is itself worth a visit: its 1,434m-long fortified wall is one of the best-preserved in the country. For youngsters, the biggest draw of the region has to


be the Vendée’s award-winning historic theme park Puy du Fou, which brings history to life through a series of spectacular re-enactments. Keep your eyes peeled for the rooks, too – they’ve been trained to collect litter!
