Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

With its mountains, rivers and lakes, this rugged region of France is pure paradise for outdoorsy types

NOTHING says adventure like a camping holiday in the mountains, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is the perfect destination if you’re hankering to get back to nature. It’s famous for its ski resorts – when, admittedly, you’d

probably rather be tucked up in a cosy cabin than battling the elements in a tent – but in summer, it’s a different story, with those icy slopes transformed into lush alpine pastures. In fact, the tourist board lists more than 1,000 campsites across the region: relax in one of the dreamy lakeside havens (Lake Geneva is a popular choice), unzip your tent to the breathtaking sight of the Ardèche gorges, or pitch up within rumbling distance of the Chaîne des Puys volcanoes (you can sleep easy; they’re dormant). Sites come in all shapes and sizes, from fully serviced wellbeing retreats to tiny, off-the- beaten track gems. The Rhône-Alpes, with its mountains and the Rhône

river, is perfect for hiking and other outdoor pursuits, such as mountain-biking, climbing or canoeing. The region is also home to three of France’s largest lakes,

making it ideal for water sports fans. Natural wonders include the natural stone arch of Pont d’Arc, the Chamonix glacier, Chauvet Cave with its 33,000-year-old cave paintings, the underground formations of Grotte de la Madeleine and, last but not least, Mont-Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. You may be in one of the wildest regions of France, but city slickers, fear not: pop the cities of Lyon, Saint- Étienne and Grenoble on your to-do list, where you will find museums, art galleries, shopping and more. Lyon’s recently opened Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie is a must, while Saint-Étienne is a UNESCO City of Design and hosts a design biennale. Grenoble, nestled at the foot of the Alps, has earned itself a reputation as one of Europe’s most important centres for research, technology, and innovation. The spa towns of Évian-les- Bains and Thonon-les-Bains are also well worth a trip (and a pampering session). Foodie fans, shake out your napkins: Lyon is famous for having been dubbed ‘the world capital of gastronomy’
