n People love making lists, how about seeing how many bird species you can spot in 2020 and then see if you can beat it in 2021. You can also help conservation by sending your records to your local biodiversity recording center. In South Wales this is SEWBReC
www.sewbrec.org.uk/submit-records- sewbrecord.page.
nVolunteer with your Local Wildlife Trust. Our volunteers are hugely appreciated and essential to our work. You would get to meet friendly like-minded people, learn new skills and keep fit! We have opportunities for office work, wildlife surveying, volunteer shepherds and habitat management. Just contact your local Wildlife Trust for more details.
n Resources are limited and pollution is often a consequence of our consumption. We can all take measures to reduce this in 2020. Waste less food, use public transport or walk where possible, making sure appliances are not left on, are all things we can be a bit better at with resultant benefits for all.
n Get involved in Phenology. What is that you ask? “Phenology is the study of seasonal changes in plants and animals from year to year, such as flowering of plants, emergence of insects and migration of birds, especially their timing and relationship with weather and climate”. Make a record of when you see your first Bluebell, Frogspawn, Swallow, when Hawthorn blossoms etc, see how this changes from year to year and if this is connected to the weather. Studies such as this are important in relation to the effects of Climate Change. You
can get involved and feed in to “Natures Calendar” at
https://naturescalendar.woodlandtrust.org.uk/
n If it isn’t too cold, it’s a great time to dig a pond. There is nothing better for wildlife in your garden than a pond and even the smallest ones can have great benefits. If you get busy now the pond would be ready for your amphibian pals in the spring! The same applies for bird boxes, get one up now ready for your feathered friends to move in.
n Single use plastic. It has been all over the news in 2019, if you haven’t taken steps to reduce your use of these already then this would be a great resolution for 2020. For some tips visit

n Join your local Wildlife Trust, the support we receive from our members is vital for us to continue to conserve our wildlife. We offer a great many benefits to our members in return, including reserves guides, magazines and the many great events we run throughout the year. Visit
https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/join Hopefully there is a resolution there for all, just remember to keep it up beyond the end of January!
