THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE COWLEY

Cowley is the most comforting of Cotswolds villages, well placed between Cheltenham and Cirencester and home to Cowley Manor, where hotel and horticulture go hand in hand.
On first arrival, the racks of wellingtons outside the front door announce that this is a place of green space appreciation and this I had every intention of doing as the winter sunshine joined me in my mission.
Trees are a real feature of this landscape, adorable acres of land and water swirling around the impressive house and church.
As I set off, the sunlight illuminated the Lawson cypresses like giant tree torches signalling the joy ahead, promptly evident as the light poured through the surrounding trees and refracted in
the winter mist – a magical sight. An enchanting swing gently rocked under a Blue Atlas Cedar and not long into my journey I met the Victorian water gardens. Here a cascade tumbles down a water staircase into a lower pool, while a serene swan watched on as still as if he were made of snow! Not far away, a regal four- stemmed Redwood is worth a nod as you potter peacefully towards the Boat House Lake.
The River Churn is surely charmed to live in such a setting and happily gurgles as it dreams of spring days ahead and the banks of rhododendrons to come.
The most impressive view surely has to be alongside the Upper Lake looking back towards the Manor with its upper lawn and Italianate terrace and an ideal pausing point for half way through my winter wander.
