WHY SEEING A DENTAL HYGIENIST IS ESSENTIAL

Has it been a while since you visited the hygienist? Visiting a dental hygienist regularly can offer a number of benefits as healthy teeth are key to a healthy smile and sense of confidence and self esteem that comes with it. When your dentist recommends you see a hygienist what exactly do they do?

Healthy Gums A poor daily hygiene routine can lead to gum disease-painful bleeding gums and bad breath. Preventing the above is the dental hygienists top priority. Gum disease is the biggest cause of tooth loss if left untreated. With proper treatment and advice it can be treated and prevented. Hygienists remove scale and plaque build up around and under the gums to keep our teeth firmly attached to the gums. Even if you have excellent oral hygiene you still can’t reach difficult parts of the mouth as well as the hygienist who has all the specialist tools to remove plaque.

A Whiter Smile Having a smile you are happy with can boost your self confidence. Unfortunately daily habits such as drinking coffee and wine and smoking are a few examples of things that can stain your teeth and harm their appearance. Regular visits to the hygienist will remove plaque and tartar deposits that naturally build up over time and polish away stains to give you a brighter whiter smile.

Early Detection As well as keeping your teeth and gums healthy a dental hygienist also has the opportunity to lookout for early signs of oral

cancer, decay, fractures and loose fillings and alert your dentist of any issues. If oral cancers are caught early they are likely to be successfully treated.

Fresh Breath A large number of people are concerned about having bad breath but do nothing about it. Although brushing your teeth regularly and using mouthwash will keep your breath fresh, it might sometimes not be enough to keep you confident and you may be experiencing halitosis (bad breath) . A hygienist can give your teeth a regular deep clean and help you to avoid the problem. They will also recommend the best products for your specific needs.

Direct Access Recent changes in regulation means that you can now access a dental hygienist directly without the need of seeing a dentist first. So if your dental practice hasn’t got a hygienist you can always visit a hygienist in another practice but maintain your dental check- ups with your own dentist.
