CONGRATULATIONS TO
THE MEDICINE HAT TIGERS ORGANIZATION FOR
50 YEARS IN OUR COMMUNITY!
“Willie was teasing me, he said I don’t see any tractor around so what’s your plan going down that ramp?”
As far as memorable calls, he instantly goes back to 2007’s WHL championship series, when Brennan Bosch scored the Game 7 winner in double overtime. With fog filling the 4,006-seat Arena, Ridley screaming “HE SCOOOORES” when Bosch beat Vancouver Giants goalie Tyson Sexsmith is spine-tingling.
He remembers netminder Chris Osgood scoring a goal in 1991, Steve Tsujiura’s Game 7 winner in 1980, and of course the team’s Memorial Cup wins in 1987 and 1988.
And so much more.
“There’s been lots of them,” he said.
His relationships with players has changed over the years. Back in the early 1970’s, he was close to the same age as many of the boys on the bus – he’s still friends with many of them today.
“I still keep in touch with some of the guys,” he said. “Some of the best friends I’ve made with the Tigers were from the early years, because they were more my age.
“They can relate more to you. Lanny McDonald, I’m only three
years older than him.”
Now, Ridley’s more of a grandfather figure, imparting wisdom and always there to lend an ear. And that’s how he thinks of himself as part of the team.
“I always have, and not as a broadcaster so much but when you’re the bus driver you really do,” he said. “The kids are talking to you, they come and chat with you while you’re driving, talking about this, that and the other thing.
“As a broadcaster they don’t hear you that much, so you don’t get to know them as well as when you’re hauling them around and they feel a part of you.”
As he gets older, Ridley’s been honoured in just about every way possible. A Medicine Hat civic award in 1995. The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame’s Bell Memorial Award in 2000. Alberta’s Hockey Hall of Fame and the Western Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame this year alone.
But 4,000 games? That’s rarer company than any of the accolades.
“I really do feel blessed that I’ve been able to do this for as long as I have,” said Ridley. “My family’s allowed me to do it as well. It’s really something special.
