Carriere. “In '04 it just took off. We had guys like Kieran Block who came in — he was a defenceman in the league before and he was just kind of a free pick-up for us, and Willie turns him into our third-line checking centre. We had such a battle with Red Deer that year in the playoffs and I remember Kieran was a big part of that.”

After winning the 2004 championship, Carriere took on a teaching role at Vimy Ridge Academy in Edmonton and moved into a scouting position with the Tigers. In 2012, Carriere was presented with an opportunity to join the Edmonton Oilers as their senior director of player development, where he remained until this year.

“Playing is the best, but when you can’t play anymore you have to find things that excite you about being in the game. I always liked coaching and I liked teaching, it brought both together,” said Carriere, who played his junior years with the

Saskatoon Blades and University of Alberta. “All of (Edmonton's) draft prospects that were playing junior or college, it was my responsibility to go around and build development plans for them, and then see the plans through with drills or video coaching. It was like a distance learning

program that we had set up there for a while.”

But with new management comes a new perspective, and when Edmonton

moved on from general manager Craig MacTavish, Carriere’s role with the Oilers changed significantly. While it ultimately prompted him to part ways with the team, it opened the door for

“It changed after Craig, the philosophy changed around my job,” he said. “So, I came back here to Vimy Ridge and I have a hockey phys- ed class and I teach some other academic subjects. And then Darrell and Willie got me back on with the Tigers in a scouting role again … Every once in a while, I’ll get a call from Willie or Darrell and we’ll talk about the team, and talk about where things are at, and talk about some

players. Then you get out to the rink, it’s good. That’s the part that you really enjoy in the game, is being at the rink and watching the guys play.”

The Tigers went on to win the Ed Chynoweth Cup under Desjardins again in 2007 — their fifth in franchise history — but they’ve yet to return to the finals despite reaching the playoffs in 11 of the 12 years since. Carriere says he hopes to see the team retain its place atop the league in the near future, even if that means taking a risk or two.

“It’s great that you’re always making the playoffs, but once in a while it’s nice to take a shot at things,” he said. “I’m not saying this is the year. But I’m saying — it’s good to be in the playoffs all the time, but it’s really, really exciting to go far in the playoffs, to go right to the end. When you’ve got the right team for that, when you’ve got the guys, it’s good to make a few moves along the way and try to shore up maybe a defenceman or some depth up front or more scoring, and really kind of give the city something to get really excited about — a good, deep playoff run.”
