RM: What do you remember about the first season?
Darrell —“The sheer excitement that gripped this community in 1970 when the franchise began its inaugural season in the Western Canadian Hockey League. As well as how the fans truly supported and embraced the team.”
RM: What are your fondest memories spent with your father at the arena, or surrounding the team in general?
Brent & Darrell —“Although there have been so many great moments in our history, here are a few of our fondest memories surrounding the team in general:
❚ Tom Lysiak’s 10-point (4G, 6A) night against the Edmonton Oil Kings, December 30th, 1971, in Medicine Hat. Tigers won 12-6
❚ Having all three Gassoff brothers (Bob, Brad and Ken) on one team in 1972-73
❚ Boyd Anderson setting a league record for fastest five goals, scored on October 7, 1972, against the Flin Flon Bombers in the third period. He scored all five goals in 2 minutes and 35 seconds and we won 10-1
❚ Lanny McDonald’s penalty shot against the Saskatoon Blades in 1973 to win first WCHL Championship
❚ Winning the team’s first WCHL Championship in 1973 and going to the Memorial Cup, where we lost to eventual Memorial Cup champions, the Toronto Marlboros
❚ Tom Lysiak winning back-to-back league scoring titles in 1971-72 and 1972-73
❚ Don Murdoch’s rookie scoring record in 1974-75 (82G, 59A in 70 GP)
❚ Steve Tsujiura scoring a hat trick during his 15-year-old season as an AP in 1977-78
❚ Tsujiura’s game-winning goal during overtime to win Game 7 against Billings, 4-3, April 1980
❚ Game 7 in Medicine Hat versus Portland during the 1986-87 WHL final to win the WHL championship
❚ Winning the franchise’s first Memorial Cup in Oshawa, Ont. by defeating Oshawa in the final, 6-2, May 15, 1987
❚ Defeating Kamloops four games to two to win the WHL Championship in 1988
❚ Winning the Memorial Cup for the second straight year in Chicoutimi, Que. by defeating Windsor, 7-6, in the final game May 14, 1988
❚ Chris Osgood scoring a goal, January 3, 1991
❚ Retiring Lanny McDonald’s jersey, January 12, 1991
❚ Kevin Riehl setting the Tigers all- time goal record, March 14, 1992
❚ Sergei Klimentiev setting the record for most goals by a defenceman in a single game (4), March 12, 1995
❚ When Jay Bouwmeester became the youngest player to play for Team Canada at the World Juniors at 16 years old in 2000, and Canada won bronze
❚ The Medicine Hat Tigers nominating and having the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame recognize and induct Bob Ridley in 2000
❚ Winning the franchise’s fourth WHL championship in 2004 when we swept Everett in four games
❚ Winning four regular back-to-back division titles, 2004-2007
❚ Game 7 against the Vancouver Giants with the fog coming off the ice and Brennan Bosch scoring the game-winning goal in double OT to win the franchise’s fifth WHL Championship in 2007
❚ The Medicine Hat Tigers nominating Bob Ridley in 2006-07 and the Lantz brothers in 2012-13, and having them both recognized for the WHL Distinguished Service Award
❚ Tyler Ennis’ six-goal game, Feb 27, 2009
❚ Linden Vey winning the 2010-11 WHL and CHL Scoring Leader with 116 points (46G, 70A) in 69 games
❚ Emerson Etem scoring his 50th goal of the season in 50 games played on February 12th, 2012 against the Brandon Wheat Kings
❚ The Medicine Hat Tigers asking city council to name the broadcast booth in the new rink in honour of Bob Ridley in September of 2013
❚ The last game in The Arena, March 21, 2015, where we defeated the Saskatoon Blades, 6-2, and Tyler Lewington scored the last regular season goal ever in that rink
❚ First game in the new building, Sep 26, 2015
❚ The 51-win season in 2016-17
❚ Retiring Tom Lysiak’s jersey, February 25, 2017
❚ David Quenneville breaking Kris Russell’s record for most career points by a Tigers defenceman, February 10, 2018
❚ Winning 1,800 WHL games and becoming the first franchise in the same city/same team to do so, November 6, 2019.”
