“They’d have signs up like ‘Who the hell is Medicine Hat and who cares?’ She told them, ‘You’ll be knowing who Medicine Hat is at the end of this tournament,’ and they did win so she was pretty happy about that,” said Val.
Grandma Leitch became a familiar face to players and fans alike. The devout season ticket holder would even take the time to compose poetry featuring every player on the team to read aloud at the annual awards banquet.
“She would write a poem and they would have her up in front — and she was like 4-foot-11 — and she would write a poem that would include every single player’s name,” said Val. “She was a favourite of Bob Ridley and the Masers (owners) just loved her, so they were very happy to have her do her poem thing and she loved doing it for them.”
Harold added Grandma Leitch even created a voodoo doll in the image of a referee and gave it to former coach Bryan Maxwell, who was behind the bench for Medicine Hat’s first Memorial Cup championship in 1987.
“She said ‘I’m going to give it to him because this is what he’ll do, he can take his arm off and throw it,’” he said. “That brought the house down. It was pretty good.”
While Grandma Leitch passed
in 2013, her legacy remains through fans like Val and Harold, as well as countless other young fans learning to love the game through their hometown Medicine Hat Tigers.
