“There were people waiting for us and then they had a parade for us and that was really neat. We worked our way into the rink and there were lots of people at the rink. It was pretty fantastic, maybe just five days late."

Maxwell parted ways with the Tigers in the off-season to take on an assistant coaching role with the Los Angeles Kings, meanwhile Medicine Hat went on to repeat as Memorial Cup champions under Barry Melrose.

After two seasons in the NHL, Maxwell returned to the Dub to coach the Spokane Chiefs — where he would win the Memorial Cup again in his second year behind their bench.

After leaving Spokane in 1994, Maxwell returned to the Central Division to serve as head coach and general manager of his hometown Lethbridge Hurricanes for six seasons, from 1995 to 2003.

Looking back on it all, Maxwell says none of it would have been possible if former Tabby head coach Jack Shupe didn’t take a chance on a young forward stepping into a new defensive role.

Maxwell added “junior is the best time of your life, you build friendships that you

“Without Jack picking me, it doesn’t happen,” said Maxwell. “I ended up playing in the NHL, I ended up coaching in the NHL. My life has been phenomenal and it

have for the remainder of your life.” While he maintains relationships with many of his former teammates, coaches and players, Maxwell has also lost a few of those close friends over the years, like Shupe, teammates Bob Gassoff and Tom Lysiak and Memorial Cup standout Guy Phillips.

junior to win a Memorial Cup for the first time.

It was fantastic to be able to go back to where you played

“First of all, to play with Bobby, scary. Scary. Never, ever until this day have I seen anybody tougher. Tommy Lysiak was tough as nails too, and nobody knew that. He was super skilled and a pleasure to play with,” said Maxwell. “Guy Phillips, we don’t win without Guy in Oshawa, that’s for sure. He’s sorely missed.”

Maxwell still lives in Lethbridge today, and even returned to the Hurricanes as an assistant coach for the 2014-15 season before retiring. But even after spending nearly twice as much time in the Hurricanes organization, Maxwell admits he still bleeds orange and black, and he always will.

“I always, until this day hope for the Tigers to do well and have success and win. The funny thing is, I don’t feel the same for the Hurricanes right now,” said Maxwell.

“Once a Tiger, always a Tiger.” Experience + Enthusiasm = Excellence
