Etching is the controlled corrosion of a surface with Acid. In jewellery the process is used to form surface decoration on metal; some parts of the surface are protected by an acid resisting substance whilst the unprotected is eaten away by the Acid.
Also used to treat 22ct & 18ct to clean oxides from metal after heating and to remove investment powder after castings are done.
Recommended use 10% Acid to 90% water at 40 degrees C.
