Highland Ponies in Glen Prosen P
rofessional photographer Matt Limb OBE shares his experience - and stunning
photographs - of working alongside Highland ponies in the Scottish Highlands with a ghillie, deer stalking.
After a chance introduction to Eric Starke, winner of the Fred Taylor Memorial Trophy for working hill ponies at the Scottish Game Fair, photographer Matt Limb began a long awaited road trip to Scotland. During this time, he followed a dwindling breed of traditional Highland ghillies as they worked their ponies in the remote Scottish Highlands to bring stags and hinds off the hill. “I have always had a strong
affection for working animals,” says Matt. “I’ve spent a lot of time with working dogs, but never had as much time working with man’s other great friend – the horse. Or in this case, the pony.
“My time with Eric and his ponies Cally and Mia was highly memorable as I watched them working in the steep sided Angus Glens bringing the red stags off the hill, often over terrain that would be inaccessible to even the highest tech off-road multi- terrain vehicles.”
After some thought during compiling and editing the photography, along with support from The Highland Pony Society, the notion for his book, Highland Ponies in Glen Prosen, came into existence. The book captures and records one of the remaining Scottish ghillies that breeds, trains and works Highland ponies. This 135-page book is priced £25 and is available from
