Report 2019 Successes

he start of the year saw the Ian Stark Equestrian Centre wrapping up its


various winter leagues. Katy McFadyen and Hawkmoon Lady Luck took the win in the show jumping final. Joanna Howlett and Hot Pepper secured the last of the indoor cross country competitions. Lastly, Alex Mundell and Coolrock Gold Dust became the dressage champions after winning all of their previous competitions over the series.


Riders from Scotland made the long trek to Gloucestershire in May to compete at Badminton Horse Trials. In the main event, Wills Oakden from Perthshire, rode the bay gelding Cooley Ramiro, owned by the Balcarres Eventing Syndicate. The combination jumped double clear at their first attempt at this event, placing a very respectable 25th.

Open Show, with a superb entry of horses and ponies. The supreme champion accolade of 2019 went to Galloway PC member Libby Kay with Griarshill Frederick, the winners of the morning’s pony championship. The horse championship was awarded to Samantha Cloy on Noble Credit Crunch, with Eden McCulloch and Oldlands Last Chance gaining the honours in the working hunter ring.


At the annual Brechin Castle Equestrian Spring Show, the supreme championship went to Rustums Komati, the 148cm show pony bred by Jill Cousens. The part-bred Arab was ridden by Iona Bruce. The pair were also selected for the local pony prize and as the ridden champions. The reserve supreme went to the overall M&M ridden champion, Crossowen Angelina, with Callie Lorimer.


The Royal Highland Show marked its 179th year.The overall ridden M&M HOYS ticket went to Northwick Notorious ridden by Claire Evans. Brooke Kehoe was also delighted to qualify for HOYS on home turf, winning the ridden Welsh B class with Pillheath Prince Charming. In the Cuddy, the title went to the M&M champion Walseker Colorado, a three year old section B produced by Colin Tibbey.

At Blair Castle International Horse Trials, topping the table round Scotland’s only CCI 4* track was Emilie Chandler and the 16.2hh gelding Gortfadda Diamond, who led from start to

finish. In the grassroots, Murrah Hall Midnight Maelstrom took the win with Annie Sandell, who produced him at her home in Gretna. Rose Macpherson stood on the podium in the BE100, a first win for her chestnut mare, HHS Canya.


In the showing rings, the overall ridden supreme went to Gillian McMurray’s Trailtrow Tearlach, the novice champion. The 2018 novice ridden champion, Katrina of Strathmore, returned to take the in-hand title. Aileen Curle’s Harris of Mendick also had a great show, heading the HOYS qualifier on the first day before taking the ridden gold medal in the NPS Scotland Finals, ridden by Brian Williams.


At HOYS, Glasgow-based Julie Bankier finished her hunter pony career on a high, riding the mare Toncynfigg Liberty X to win the


153cm class before taking the championship. It was also a non- stop week for Richard Telford and his team, who brought five horses to the NEC from Scotland, with a friend bringing a further two. His highlight of the show was riding Kilmannan Jack Sparrow to victory in the M&M ridden Dales pony of the year.
